Between worlds: north, south, wilds, city — every day in transition, translation, or in silence trying to make sense of where we are now. Prepping for the next round. Reading every word. You can, too. Hot takes & quick responses will be scarce.
I don’t want to live in a world without anthropologists, archaeologists, archivists, historians, librarians, museums. Where we come from matters, how we got here matters, remembering how we made decisions, remembering the process that’s how we learn, grow, understand who we are.

Rudy Bridges is younger than the Sitting President of the United States and 29 sitting United States Senators
It’s useful for people of my generation to be reminded that this wasn’t that long ago. Ruby Bridges isn’t just still alive—she’s only 71, not ancient!
65 years ago on Nov. 14, little Ruby Bridges was escorted into an all-white elementary school in New Orleans. Norman Rockwell, renowned for blissful depictions of Americana, did this remarkable painting for Look magazine. Printed as a double page, over-size spread, it's his masterpiece.

Posting ghost jobs should be illegal. If companies do this to harvest consumer data or create the appearance that they are “always hiring” to appease investors, how is this just not fraud? Is there a meaningful legislative remedy for this?

One of the reasons I love retro-SF futures is because they speak to this increasing trend of turning shit off and disconnecting devices. When AWS goes down and bricks your bed, fridge, and thermostat, the appeal of analog is keenly felt.

Excellent clip on the history of hostile architecture in NYC-it’s current form seen in the leaning benches in subways &lack of any seating (except Amtrak Lounge) in Moynihan station impacting ppl who are unhoused, older, and/or disabled. Of course, Robert Moses & his legacy are responsible for this.

If you haven’t personally experienced a hostile takeover where the new CEO is just there to strip a company for parts and make as much profit for himself and the board as possible before declaring bankruptcy, welcome America.

You’re living it now.

Five sandhill cranes flying over. Someday maybe they will land nearby.

Some ash trees that were green last weekend have turned completely yellow. The poplars are beginning to turn. Virginia creeper and a Tatarian maple are beginning to show red.

Sandhill cranes gathered in the fields about 10 miles away on Tuesday. First time, I’ve ever seen them that close to us. A small flock of Canada Geese have been settled in a field a few miles north. At the river there’s scads of blackbirds and a great blue heron.

The House Wrens, Goldfinches, Meadowlarks, Swallows and Kingbirds are still hanging around though I haven’t heard any Kingbirds at all today which is unusual. I had both the Baltimore Oriole at an Orchard Oriole in the yard last week. I don’t think the Ravens ever truly leave.

This weekend has brought the return of birds heading back south: Swainson’s Thrush, Northern Flicker, Cedar Waxwing, Blackpoll Warbler, Palm Warbler, Common Yellowthroat, Lincoln Sparrow, Swamp Sparrow, Savannah Sparrow and White-Throated Sparrow.

Are there actually “normal” people out there to offend, who won’t vote for anything except the most bland nothingburger, or is it a term thrown around to illustrate some person’s talking point? Is that really the right word? I suspect “normal” means “people who agree with me”.

I am heading back to the council estate where it all began today.

Seven Canada geese flew over today. A Great Blue Heron stopped by for a visit. The odd ones picked up a few days ago by Merlin were an Eastern Blue Bird and a Semipalmated Sandpiper. The locals I’ve seen and heard most this week are the red-wing blackbirds, killdeer, kingbirds and swallows.
