Are you passionate about Scotland's scientific heritage?

Help us tell the story of one of Scotland’s greatest minds; James Hutton, the founder of modern geology, through his most famous geological outcrop Siccar Point.

Donate today!

An image of Siccar Point, showing the famous unconformity where vertical rock units are overlain by sub-horizontal rock units. Text over the image reads "Share the history and science of Siccar Point. Help us build the Deep Time Trail. "A great initiative! I look forward to visiting Siccar Point again". "Such an opportunity to bring more focus to a foundational exposure for our science" Donate now!"

We have some great rewards if you donate to help make the Deep Time Trail a reality!

First up, we have reproductions of the “Lost Drawings”. These illustrations were prepared by John Clerk of Eldin and were supposed to illustrate the later volumes of Hutton’s Theory of Earth
Prints of the Lost Drawings scattered on a table and held down with beach pebbles. Most of the prints are black ink engraving prints on cream paper.

Please help meet the target and build the Deep Time Trail!

Siccar Point is one of the most important geoheritage sites in the world; we think visitors deserve to hear why.

Help us install a Deep Time Trail - donate to the Crowdfunder now. www.crowdfunder.co.uk/siccar-point

Also, an extremely high tide meant I literally had to drive through the sea on the coastal bit of the road back to the hostel 😳

Such a pleasure meeting the community of Elgol last night. I was invited to talk about the palaeontology fieldwork taking place here, and the story of the Elgol Dinosaur. People brought beach finds to share and identify, and we discussed ways to put local discoveries on display.

Just came across this cool diagram section of the Storr landslip on #Skye (Anderson & Dunham 1966). As if each cliff section is falling backwards as the dolorite tablecloth is pulled out from under their Jurassic feet.
A photograph in a book showing the famous rock formation called the Quirang in Skye, Scotland. A series of jagged rocks slope away from a sheer black cliff. A geological diagramm of the rocks in the Quirang in Skye. They form a group of upright sections of cliff that have broken off and are tilted away towards the sea

Farewell to Mike Waldman, who found the first Mesozoic mammal from Scotland and discovered our incredible fossil locality in Skye. The first vertebrate fossil incorporating Scottish Gaidhlig was named in his honour. He was a truly lovely, warm, generous person 💙 www.theguardian.com/science/2025...

How am I supposed to take the Paskapoo Formation seriously? 💩

Turns out I can still do a cartwheel. I'm pretty chuffed seeing as its 25 years since my last one 🤸🏼

The Roslin Institute is looking for a full time Engagement Officer. Great to see them highlight that you don’t need a research background or PhD.
My research background is a massive help to me in my career, but that is just one of many routes that people can take into engagement. We need all voices!
Due to the amount of hands-on, lab-based engagement in our programme, we are looking for someone with at least basic (ideally biology-focused) lab skills, and we are very open to hearing about all relevant experience - a research background and/or PhD level qualifications are not required.

Welcome to the world, Nujalikodon cassiopeiae! This little mammaliaform from Greenland is the oldest definitive docodontan, telling us more about this important clade's origin and palaeography, and how their complex teeth evolved. (Artwork by Pedro Andrade)
