it was the local symphony + local choirs in fact and there were a few vocal soloists that made me realize idk if I've ever been in a room with someone doing, whatever you call it, Opera Singing, and it's wild. wow. music!!

you're telling me this guy wrote "hark! the herald angels sing" AND "love divine all loves excelling" AND "Christ the Lord is risen today" AND "lo! He comes with clouds descending" AND...

I honestly think if you asked someone to sit down and write a list of hymns like 40%+ of what they listed would be his. I know basically nothing about music or history or anything but from a purely pew-based lay perspective he may be The english-language hymnist

7 out of 10 times I'm singing and feeling like "man this is hitting," I peek at the credits and there he is

I do have some modern faves from the good ol' OCP hymnal. but the bulk of stuff we've come up with from the post-liturgical-movement era is unsingable in the literal sense of the word. how is an untrained congregation supposed to sing this stuff

my favorite music we sing at my parish that aren't 1600 year old hymns or traditional basque folk songs or whatever are all by 1) charles wesley or b) some 19th century priest you've never heard of who was an oxford movement convert from anglicanism. hymns aren't our strong suit

like I say elsewhere, you can have other goalposts and other questions but the answer to the question "can you be eligible for one order but not another?" is straightforwardly yes

every day I think about the last smallpox vaccine holdouts who were dragged out of their homes to be given the jab. and now: no more smallpox. it's gone

anyway, I hate it

this just made me realize that in this metaphor either Jesus is the priest's Wife (hm) or the (often male) communicant is the priest's wife and the "another Man touching her" is Jesus

"let's avoid the easter bunny guy": reasonable, for the best, would be kind of cruel to force her into it

"let's avoid the MMR vaccine": insane, irresponsible, risking her life

kids really do just do that. my sister also flipped out every time she saw someone dressed in a mascot fursuit thing, one of my earliest memories is my mom and chasing her through a Tops when she was a toddler after she spotted an easter bunny and fled, screaming lol
December 5, 2025 at 7:43 PM
exactly. the less real the diseases seem, the more "questions" you're hearing, the more reasonable "we'll just hold off until she's older rather than put her through this now" just feel. but it's not actually reasonable

I remember she always tried REALLY hard to be brave beforehand and just would lost it at the last moment. poor kid. still better than measles!!!!!!!!!!!
December 5, 2025 at 7:17 PM
my sister flipped out, like, hysterical screaming and having to be restrained, every time she got shots well into elementary school. and my parents' attitude was "kids flip out sometimes, which is less than ideal but 🤷‍♀️"
