I had previously been to the Netherlands as a tourist, but to grasp the extent of the systemic racism here, it seems you really need to spend time in everyday life, spend time with people, and, most importantly, look for a job.

The labor market slowdown is real, showing up in declining manufacturing hiring, struggling older workers, among others.
Payrolls jump more than expected 119,000 in September, but hiring over the summer was revised down even further. Gains in the service sector - healthcare and social assistance and leisure and hospitality accounted for nearly all of those gains. Construction also added jobs to build data centers.

Yarın 10 Ekim’in 10. yıldönümü.

"One underrated exit strategy for those weary of enshittification is opting out: we users can bail on platforms that commodify our passive participation and give us little in return." +
“Enshittification” was a term coined by Cory Doctorow, in 2022, to describe how the technologies that dominated our daily lives seemed to be all getting worse at the same time. Now, in a new book, he expands on the word that has become bleakly relevant.

I hope everyone at UMass Boston stays safe.
Not fun being on campus with an active threat while trying to teach.
A growing number of HBCUs are on lockdown due to targeted threats. These hate crimes are unacceptable. I stand with the students, faculty, and communities affected, and call on DOJ and FBI to act swiftly.

Our country needs leadership that unites, not divides.

“I suspect that left-leaning journalists and editors are migrating back to X not because of the ideological tenor of Bluesky but because they miss the attention arms race. If X-ism is preferable to Blueskyism, it’s because X users don’t have to work as hard to reach people.”
“On the internet, a bigger megaphone is still considered a better one.” In his latest column, @chaykak.bsky.social writes about why many liberals who had fled X for Bluesky seem to be embracing the Elon Musk-owned platform once more.

This article opened up my mind. A must-read!
A psychology professor argues that young people, especially Gen Z-ers, are facing an “epidemic of perfectionism,” largely fuelled by social media.
The Pain of Perfectionism
It’s the fault people humblebrag about in job interviews, but psychologists are discovering more and more about the real harm it causes.

If I remember correctly, Ezra Furman once said in an interview that she wanted to make the best album in the world. Her new album came out today. I don’t know if it’s the best, but it’s definitely one of the best! You have to listen to Goodbye Small Head.

The manufacturing restoring convo needs more facts. Any new manufacturing jobs will likely be high-skilled which require lots of training (ca. 10 years). We need to commit to a manufacturing future, e.g. with tax credits for green tech. Erratic tariffs ain't it.
