This is a nice paper. It faces down a common problem: in order to explain to why a common approach cannot work even in theory, we first need to teach a framework in which regression is not magic that tells us which variables on right cause the variable on left. It's exhausting.

Anyway great paper!

🧩Learning to talk & read isn’t just about effort or teaching—it’s shaped by biology, experience & context

🧠Our new review links genetics, neuroscience, psychology & education to show why some children find language or reading easier.

🖼️genes→brain→cognition→behaviour 🧵👇
Figure 2 in the review: Levels of analysis from genes and brain systems to cognition and behaviour.
The child both influences and is influenced by parents through genetically shaped interactions, and by the wider school and social environment.

Also useful to know all the same! Especially given you are not so far away :)

This is all really helpful, thank you! Doesn't necessarily need to be psych specific, just wanted to make sure I wouldn't be the odd one out and unable to follow specialist applications. I'll figure out the best option when your in-person registration is released!
emljames.bsky.social
Thank you! How discipline specific/general will they be? I did spot your Physalia one, but wasn't sure whether it might be biology-heavy (I'm in developmental psychology)

Too many children with speech and language challenges are being left out and left behind at school.

Today, we’ve launched our own white paper – because Government must get SEND reform right.

Share it with your MP today👇

Grace Wahba was just recently awarded for her work on smoothing splines. www.statprize.org

They're wicked cool.

If you want to give them a look there's no better place to start than Wood's book on GAMs (the 2017 2nd Ed is a must)
