Columbia cancelled my class on race and media, and Washington Post fired me for speaking about race..

But I’m teaching (again) and speaking anyway.

Behind the scenes of rehearsal for the Fall cohort of Race, Media and International Affairs.

600+ students this fall.

We move! ✊🏾

I wrote about some good! news!! for low-income artists and unhoused folks in SF. We need some joy in this terrible moment, and @hospitalityhousesf.bsky.social is delivering. Check out my latest piece on what the purchase of a building on Market Street means for the future of artmaking in the city.

NEW: @hospitalityhousesf.bsky.social has purchased 1009 Market St., the building housing its fine art studio. In a time of economic insecurity, a rise in anti-homelessness sentiment, and an affordability crisis, this acquisition is a rare win for low-income artists in San Francisco
‘A Creator’s Dream’: Inside the SF Studio Building a Hub for Low-Income Artists
Hospitality House has purchased a mid-Market building that contains the nonprofit’s fine art studio — securing its future forever.

Here's my commentary piece on the Big Art Loop, and what it means to hand our public space over to a billionaire and his choice of 100 pieces of existing, large-scale art.

And for god's sake: Send your opinions to the agencies/nonprofit/org involved, not to me!

Who Has a Say In the Flood of Public Art Coming to San Francisco?
The Sijbrandij Foundation’s plan to install 100 pieces of large-scale art around the city needs public oversight.

When I worked at berklee college of music the Pres gave some remarks where he mentioned lynyrd skynyrd for some reason but he pronounced it LeoNARD SkeNARD .... a day that lived in infamy tied with the motivational speaker who pronounced bass like the fish

Glenn Zuehls, the publisher who killed the SF Bay Guardian, wrote “commitmet to excellence” on a whiteboard during one of his standard completely insane staff meetings in 2015, and I think about it every time I write the word commitment

In high school, 35 years ago, our track coach once wrote “DON’T FROGET” on the board and to this day, every single time someone says “don’t forget,” I hear “don’t froget” in my head. But I can’t remember the name of a person I met 10 minutes ago

We're spotlighting Bay Area worker co-ops, starting with Rainbow Grocery Cooperative in SF, "a place where Karens drift through the aisles like hungry ghosts, aimless without a manager at whom to direct their ire. At Rainbow, the buck stops with the 200 or so worker-owners." ✍️: @soleilho.com

Staff at San Francisco’s Rainbow Grocery reflect on collectivity, retail personhood, and an aesthetic disagreement that ended in a fistfight.

You could read @mckinneykelsey.bsky.social’s excellent take or you could trust @rollingstone.com’s four star review given after they fired all their critics (conveniently shared in Taylor’s Instagram stories!). I’m going to choose the former and certainly did not click on the latter.
There is very rarely money in trying to make something that matters to you. But there is a lot of money in making things that are just good enough to get people to buy them. That's how we end up with Marvel movies and infinite remakes and one
thousand books about fucking vampires and bad paintings reselling for millions of dollars. If you're willing to compromise everything-to have no public morals or beliefs, to make your work palatable to everyone-there is so, so much money to be made. Of course, that compromise is going to be the version of art that corporations want made. An artist is supposed to fight against that, to try to make something good even if it doesn't make them a billion dollars. Greed will always destroy good work, because money and art have drastically different priorities. On The Life of a Showgirl, it's undeniable which path Taylor Swift has decided to value more.

Also, I don't mean this as optimism (on Bluesky? God forbid) but taking a leadership job for which you're unqualified in a medium you haven't worked in with nothing but experienced journalists under you...is not necessarily going to go the way one thinks it might. CBS News is not a cabinet dept.>

I get tired of reading "Do not obey in advance" here over and over--endlessly repeating something like that can turn it into a form of self-soothing rather than a galvanizing call to action. But I hope every single CBS News employee is hearing it from someone important to them today.

tried to write a breezy lil show preview for @coyotemedia.org about Mabuhay Gardens’ reopening party
