2/2 🏛️ Museum settings boost decontextualised talk.
📦 Museum resources in classrooms increase rare words & complex sentences.
🏫 Regular classrooms? Less of both.
💬 Richer environments = richer language learning.

This study sets the stage for a lot of exciting questions and we were delighted to have it at Language Development Research (@langdevres.bsky.social).

🧠 New research from @OfficialUoM shows that where teachers teach affects how they talk to children — and that matters for language development. #ChildDevelopment #LanguageResearch #EarlyYears #MuseumLearning #UoMResearch #LuCiD

If you need a good laugh, here you go. (Read Séamas' memoir. It's great!)

If you work with children at all, you should probably also take this as a reminder that their minds are strange and wondrous things and their outward behaviors give us only the tiniest glimpse.

When I was 7, my teacher told us to write an article about “world cultures” for school over the weekend. I remembered it late on Sunday so in a panic I made up something called the "Icelandic Fish Festival", figuring said teacher wouldn’t know either way.

Every time the subject of Jimmy Fallon’s spinelessness comes up, I think of this passage from Tina Fey’s Bossypants
66 Amy Poehler was new to SNL and we were all crowded into the seventeenth-floor writers' room, waiting for the Wednesday night read-through to start.
[...] Amy was in the middle of some such nonsense with Seth Meyers across the table, and she did something vulgar as a joke. I can't remember what it was exactly, except it was dirty and loud and
"unladylike"
Jimmy Fallon [...] turned to her and in a faux-squeamish voice said, "Stop that!
It's not cute! I don't like it." Amy dropped what she was doing, went black in the eyes for a second, and wheeled around on him. "I don't fucking care if you like it." Jimmy was visibly startled. Amy went right back to enjoying her ridiculous bit.
With that exchange, a cosmic shift took place. Amy made it clear that she wasn't there to be cute. She wasn't there to play wives and girlfriends in the boys' scenes.
She was there to do what she wanted to do and she did not fucking care if you like it.

The Department of Psychology at NDSU invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor in Developmental Psychology, broadly defined. For best consideration, applications should be received by October 10. Questions can be directed to me. Please share widely!

The kiddo has a new article up today at @whatsleepsbeneath.com! Besides being her first paid piece, it's an excellent analysis of Buffalo Bill (from Silence of the Lambs) & Denise Bryson (from #TwinPeaks) vis-a-vis trans representation. Go check it out! #Horror #HorrorMovie #FilmSky #HorrorSky
FBI Agents, Serial Killers, and Red Lipstick: On Denise Bryson and Buffalo Bill

Anthony Bourdain spent a weekend with her in New York after the Olive Garden review went viral, taking her around and chatting about being a food writer. He later wrote the introduction to her book and my favorite line in it is "I would not play poker with her for money."
erconwell.bsky.social
When you read the (in)famous Olive Garden review, it's easy not to notice that she says lots about the decor and almost nothing about the food, ergo, she didn't like the food. You learn to listen closely to what people don't say.
Through the same lens, her review of Taco Bell is downright savage.

For a lot of reasons, I found North Dakota a really hard place to navigate socially when we first moved. Mrs. Hagerty's columns were my Rosetta Stone to understanding how people interact here. (Hint: she did not actually like the Olive Garden.) She was a regional treasure.

Oh man - I have to take moment to mark the loss of a local celebrity today, too. Marilyn Hagerty, North Dakota's (and I would unironically argue the nation's) best food columnist has passed away at the age of 99. You might know her from her viral Olive Garden review, but there's so much more. <1/2>
Marilyn Hagerty, Herald reporter and columnist for nearly 70 years, dies at age 99
She wrote for the Herald for more than 60 years and became nationally famous for her work as a food critic.

I was mistaken. I thought her newest book was already out, but it isn't for another 2 weeks.
No One Is Talking About This came out a few years ago and is devastatingly sad and very funny, often at the same time.

Is this regarding her new book? I found Priestdaddy to be a little meh, but No One Is Talking About This absolutely sucker-punched me.

I actually think most faculty and many students agree on the problems with AI. It's admin and donors who are jumping on the bandwagon, not the rank and file, and we can hold the line and back each other up.
