@mgreenephd.bsky.social This is so fantastic. I just skimmed all the chapters and they all appear to have most of the context needed to learn or introduce each of these topics. I will be sending self-learners to this book from now on for new skills! And the "Further Reading" sections? Perfection.

I'm excited to announce that my lab's open textbook on Scientific Computing for Cognitive Neuroscience (v1.0) has just gone live! Our goal is to help mend the gap between the computational skills needed by cognitive neuroscience, and typical curricula that don't yet include it. 1/3

I submitted my abstract for SfN's Neuroscience 2025 conference! 🤞Looking forward to seeing friendly faces in November.

You can’t cut funding to universities, signal to kids that using ChatGPT to write the papers is ok, and expect professors to save the day and the educational system without financial support to completely overhaul the curriculum.

You can’t just wave your hands and hope for the best.

Thank you, @marisakabas.bsky.social, for helping us tell our story. Today starts my 3rd month of unemployment for daring to be trans/non-binary in federal spaces.

NEW—In late Feb, Chris Rufo published leaked chats between queer/trans employees at US intel agencies. Then Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard said she’d fire all involved.

I spoke to chat members who were fired, are on admin leave, and who kept their jobs about the new lavender scare:
Queer intel officers targeted by top secret chat leak get their chance to speak
Chris Rufo published the chats. Staffers say a new "lavender scare" is upon us.

Last week I started a little project to archive the NIMH Data Archive (NDA) data dictionaries: codeberg.org/effigies/nda...

A first diff is now available to view changes: codeberg.org/effigies/nda...
A view of Codeberg's diff interface showing changed files and lines added in the baes_01.csv file. The diff is helpfully formatted as a table.

The meta-analysis on the relationship between Fluoride and IQ by Taylor et al. (2025) that RFK Jr. has cited contains major methodological flaws and data integrity issues that we describe in the following pre-print (submitted to meta-psychology): osf.io/preprints/os...

This Github ticket is the kind of proposal that inexperienced engineers tend to make, because they think it's about code, and not about the humans who use the system.

In any competent organization, these junior folks would get some very direct feedback and it would be a growth moment.

This is profoundly ignorant stuff. www.wired.com/story/doge-d...
In a GitHub ticket viewed by WIRED, Lavingia also suggested abandoning Drupal, a content management system (CMS) that the VA uses for publishing updates and information about the agency and the services it provides on VA facility websites. “I think we should consider removing Drupal as part of our workflow, and all content should just live in the codebase,” he wrote.

Understand this: by trying to gut Medicaid, the House GOP is targeting seniors in nursing homes, kids with disabilities, and low-income workers who can’t get health coverage from their jobs.

All so the GOP can slash taxes for millionaires, billionaires, and billionaire corporations.

It may not be cool or hip in some circles, but we legitimately do need a massive amount of people to run for office.

Flood the school boards, councils, county seats, state legislatures, Congress, etc.

Big changes at the top happen when the ground shifts at the bottom. And that can start now.

I maxed out my credit card, emptied my savings account, and took out a loan to move from Alabama to Bethesda, MD. I don’t even qualify for unemployment since I’ve only worked at NIH for a month. I will be financially and medically devastated.

Seeking suggestions for anywhere that’s hiring!!
kmsandlin.bsky.social
Today, along with 2,000 other NIH employees, I had to clear out my office 😭

It was truly the honor of my life to work with such incredibly passionate people focused on improving human health. I’ve never experienced a more positive culture where *everyone* cared about their job and serving others.

All NIH study sections canceled indefinitely. This will halt science and devastate research budgets in universities.

Scientific advancements aside, this is economically irresponsible

Every $1 spent by NIH generates $2.46

For example, in 2023, $47B in NIH spending generated ~$93B

Halting NIH spending will LOSE the US a lot of money (and talent)
An image of NIH campus. Text says : With annual budget of more than $47 billion, NIH is the largest single public funder of biomedical and behavioural research in the world. In fiscal year 2023, NIH funding generated an estimated $92.89 billion in economic activity Every state and almost every congressional district received a share of NIH investment
Each year, NIH awards over 60,000 grants that directly support more than 300,000 researchers at more than 2,500 different institutions
In fiscal year 2023, every $1 of NIH funding generated approximately $2.46 of economic activity
