Why do I spend countless hours of my time advocating for better transit?

Because I know what is possible.

Spokane has the potential to be the most livable, vibrant, and innovative city in North America.

Now is the time.

All this does is juice demand to benefit existing homeowners.

A better use for that money would be building public housing.

Stop private equity from buying single-family homes.

Instead, give young Americans low-interest mortgages & downpayment help to buy them.

Homes for young families, not Wall Street.

That’s new economic patriotism.

Spokane Reimagined had the opportunity to interview @mayorspokane.bsky.social for Week Without Driving.

Hear her thoughts on why the challenge is important, how she prefers to travel when outside of a personal vehicle, and her ideal car-free afternoon in Spokane!

Partnering with local artists (and with a few benches painted by children at Unity in the Community), we took this as an opportunity to write a love letter to our city while also highlighting the challenges faced by those who travel outside of personal automobiles.

If you live in Spokane, you might have seen some new artwork around your neighborhood recently.

To celebrate Week Without Driving (September 29-October 5), Spokane Reimagined constructed and distributed a bus bench to each of Spokane's 29 neighborhoods.

Fascinating study. Note that this is 1 in 10 adults. Factor in children and the percentage of non-driving Americans is much higher. Cities and towns need to account for their mobility needs too.
1 in 10 Americans rarely or never drive a car
Among U.S. adults, those who live in the Northeast (17%) are more likely than those in the South (10%), West (8%) and Midwest (7%) to be nondrivers.

The political power of the oil and auto industries is a direct result of the demand for their products.

The climate movement would get much more bang for their buck by advocating for dense land use and public transit investment.

Bonus: It would also decrease the influence of local auto dealers.
mateosfo.bsky.social
The climate movement's focus on the oil industry has got to be the most misplaced and un-strategic advocacy I've ever seen.

Oil demand, drilling, pricing, pipelines, refineries etc. is determined 100% by the car industry.

And the car industry has all the political power. Not the oil industry.

whoa. Every single one of the Sinclair advert buyers on this list is automotive or automotive related (insurance). That is one aspect of the power in our society held by car companies that I haven't seen studied enough.
