I try to avoid writing on the computer. I write long-hand or use a #neowriter device, which prevents me from editing as I go.

I do do a lot of editing and rearranging on my computer — I use scrivener — but I like to get my drafts out of the computer and onto paper at several stages.

Today’s assignment at @sketchbookskool.bsky.social is to document a process. This really wasn’t working until I added the yellow but now I kind of like it.

Anyway, this is how I write a first draft.

My most random/cool bookish claim to fame is that Gordon Lightfoot and I were once up for the same literary award* and I won.

*His nom was because someone made a picture book of one of his songs, making him the author of a children’s book.

This one is about my depression. I am holding my own.

The last contact was the Anderson asking the Fitz: “How are you making out, with your problems?”

The Edmund Fitzgerald answered: “We are holding our own.”

It’s her final radio message.

The Fitz wasn’t out there alone. She was sailing in company with the Arthur Anderson. When the weather turned the Fitz began to struggle — developing a list, and eventually losing radar. Unable to navigate, she asked the Anderson to lead them into harbour.

Yesterday I listened to the cover of The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald by Home Free and had a good cry. Here you go!

youtu.be/Um1PCCkyYHE?...

But the thing that moves mr most the loss of the Edmund Fitzgerald isn’t in the song.

EF: look, we have proofreading. It’s not hard. Let’s just do that.

Brain: … IF I COULD PUT TIME IN A BOTTLE …

Executive Function: Okay, troops. We have a meeting in four hours. But it’s chill. We are all prepared.

ADHD Brain: got it. we should do nothing at all until then.

EF: no, we could work on

Brain: puts the hold music on speakerphone.

Mike Johnson: "Let me look right into the camera and tell you very clearly: Republicans are the ones concerned about healthcare. Republicans are the party working around the clock everyday to fix healthcare. This is not talking points for us: we've done it."

Or, equally, why the poem doesn’t start with “first they came for well connected members of groups with a lot of social capital.”

FYI: one of us is en route to Broadview. We can't provide updates on new details we learn about Brighton Park shooting from this account, because we have to use it at Broadview.

@peoplesfabric.com is dealing with decontaminating himself at the moment. Check his feed for further shooting updates.

Thank you for getting on the ground there. I am alarmed by this and anxious to see it more fully reported. I kind of thought it would be the talk of the nation and was surprised that it didn’t catch fire that way.

Also this is the third excellent @torbooks.bsky.social book I have read in a row. The mountain is on a roll.

It’s the kind of short story that ought to come with a warning label, like “The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas.” Warning: will permanently change the way you think.

I’ve been reading INVISIBLE PLANETS, a collection of contemporary SF short stories translated from the Chinese (editor/translator the American SFF writer @kyliu99.bsky.social ). I cannot get Ma Boyang’s City of Silence” and its ever-shrinking list of permitted words out of my head.

Then, of course, a flare-up of POTS.
erinbowbooks.bsky.social
Instead of help, we got a speech about not giving in, not waving the white flag to our disease, not defining ourselves by illness.

I ended up crying in the car, sobbing “it’s not my fault “and “I didn’t do this to myself. “

Earlier this week I took my younger one, Polaris, to see our family doctor. Kiddo, like me, has been diagnosed with POTS, though their diagnosis is recent we don’t know what to do.
