It is self soothing to say that if only Palestinians accepted Israel then everything would be unlocked and peace would be possible. OK well that already happened, more than once, and what did it result in? When will people seriously grapple with the idea that perhaps Israel is a lot like Russia?

PLO recognized Israel in 1988 and 1993 and then what happened is a question nobody seems to answer on here

Oh for sure—but he also seemed to want to make the jump from “no legal legitimacy = full rebellion is required” and it’s not clear that one must do that. Also, since you blocked him, you did miss out on a rather funny follow up in which he clarified that he is a “John Adams” not a “Sam Adams,” so

fwiw it was extremely fun and satisfying to watch unfold from the sidelines, as I—not a lawyer but a political theorist—had been having my own aneurysm over his insistence that “illegitimacy” means one and only one thing, with only one political implication

“Someone” cancelled my family’s flight out of the country at the last second.

We got our boarding passes. We checked our bags. Went through security. Then at our gate our reservation ‘disappeared.’

I wonder how many readers were hoping to learn something about political theories of civil disobedience and wound up immersed in Buddhist epistemology instead

NO LOYALTY OATHS IN HIGHER ED!

Trump's attacks on our universities are an attempt to consolidate power. This loyalty oath directly undermines our right to academic freedom & goes against every democratic principle our country should uphold.

University Administrations: Reject Trump's "Loyalty Oath" Compacts
The Trump administration is trying to blackmail schools to let him and his unqualified bureaucrats run our schools. They want to dictate what schools teach, who they admit and hire, what researchers s...

Consider that you're not only surrendering your autonomy and your trust to a state that publicly despises both, in order to win some money and some favour for a while. Consider that, for anyone uninterested in your personal self-justifications, you're making yourself an accessory to this, and more.

Good reporting on the South Shore raid from South Side weekly here.

Confirms one thing I was told but didn't put in my own piece because I didn't have a second source and it seemed too insane: border agents segregated arrested residents by race

Federal Agents Storm South Shore Building, Detaining Families and Children
Families were woken by flashbangs and helicopters as hundreds of federal agents raided their homes. Days later, neighbors are still searching for the missing.

No university that signs the compact will be a university, in the accepted sense, anymore. They will be mere Trump Institutes, teaching only what subjects Trump doesn't bar them from teaching -- and only until he does. Signing is an abdication of responsibility and an act of great moral cowardice.
Benjamin Nathans | Autonomy or obedience
Guest Columnist Benjamin Nathans urges Penn’s leadership to resist the White House’s demands in its “Compact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education.”

I support nonviolent action. It's literally what I do. But telling people that allowing themselves to be harmed to demonstrate the character of their enemy will be politically transformative denies the desensitized reality of the present.

I’ve received multiple death threats + doxing (including my home address) directly following harassment from Turning Point USA, Jack Posobiec, Andy NGO, + Fox News which called me an antifa ‘financier.’

I have been forced to move my classes online.

If journalists want to talk, DM me or reply here.

Whenever anarchism — or any idea more radical than the status quo — gets dismissed as unserious, it's worth remembering the current system runs on things like "we put all the money on a scam machine that tells rich dipshits they're god."

Ellison's CBS brought on the two editors that got NYT to publish Tom Cotton's 2020 op-ed calling for soldiers to shoot protesters in the streets. Hard to find a clearer editorial throughline than "anyone protesting murder by the state should be killed for it."

when I was in college contending with Bari Weiss’s astroturfed witch hunt turning my classes and my department upside down so she could make a name for herself, it simply never occurred to me that it would WORK and I would have to spend the rest of my life hearing her name

If you'd like to delight in a side-by-side comparison, here's Bari Weiss' reported note to CBS staffers (left) and the one I cooked up on ChatGPT with a quickly dashed-off prompt (right). Looking forward to hearing from you in the days and weeks ahead!

Do Nothing and Cry Anyway Award is cross ideological btw. The ostensibly left wing people who complain about No Kings, liberals who criticize Thunberg for actually putting herself on the line for Gaza, and right wingers who complain about protesting after a political event are the same types of ppl.

Rule of thumb is always if they're actually out there getting the shit beat of them by government or by police then 99% of the criticism is from Do Nothing and Cry Anyway Award winners

One way (not the only way, but one way) I am a nerd is that I feel compelled to tell you that some creatures do hunt this way. Foxes for example will kill up to twenty chickens in an hour and save them for later. Don’t begrudge the raptors the chance to restock their pantry
