And the awful truth about this is that H-4 spouses endure a brutally high rate of domestic violence, with it being epidemic in South Asian communities, and women under these visas often being afraid to, or unfamiliar with how to, report violence to law enforcement. It’s part of the exploitation.
Another fucked up aspect of the H-1B visa is the H-4 dependent visa. A spouse can accompany the H-1B sponsored worker, but has to be totally financially dependent and can't work.
Silicon Valley loves H-1B visas because they let them hire highly qualified foreign engineers for peanuts.
American engineers can quit and find a better job, but H-1B holders? The transfer process is so messy most companies won’t even consider them.
