Some thought that surviving and (just barely) not requiring hospitalization for my family's first really bad flu since 2020 would make me realize I don't need 😷 etc.

I've been down for 2 weeks, it's triggered chronic illness flares, and did you hear me? First time since 2020!

I'll keep masking!

In the summer of '99, I worked as a field assistant for Doug Morris doing GUD experiments in the badlands of southern Alberta. These bad boys kept me safe banking around rattlers on the slick clay. Now, decades later, still going strong but the terrain has changed a bit. #conspicuousnonconsumption

Put a price on congestion! It's worked amazingly well in other places. The province could:

- make people pay for parking
- pay for bridge use
- encourage alternate modes like biking

Wait, what's that you say...?

Oh.

“Dutch people cycle an average of 2.6km each per day. If this pattern was replicated worldwide, annual carbon emissions would drop by 686 million tonnes.

This mammoth figure exceeds the entire carbon footprint of most countries, including the UK, Canada, Saudi Arabia and Australia.” @euronews.com
Cycling like the Dutch would slash the world’s carbon footprint
If everybody cycled like the Dutch, we could offset the UK or Australia’s entire carbon footprint.

#BikeHfx: rode Brunswick between Cogswell and Carmichael for the first time. Lovely, except inexplicably blocked at Duke. We’re also doing boneheaded bike signals (didn’t come on at Duke, lasts about 3 secs at Sackville even as ped signal stays on).

It's the time of year where I switch over from my annual fall rewatch of Gilmore Girls to my annual winter rewatch of Snowpiercer. The vibes are... different. It seems to fit the day.

Just a reminder that if you’re interested in why we haven’t been more successful, and how we can be more successful, at actually realizing safe, protected bike infrastructure, it would be worth invest some time watching this video by #NotJustBikes if you haven’t yet.
WATCH: If you REALLY want to understand a BIG reason why cycling [aka riding a bike] is so dangerous in North America, and one of the biggest villains in the origin story of our unsafe status quo, invest some time watching this one, by NOT JUST BIKES (aka @theurbanistagenda.com here). At 8, my expectations of what it meant to exist as a woman in Canada changed forever. I now understood there were those willing to take my life for desiring an education, desiring personhood, and dreaming of equality as a woman. Today, we've not achieved the better, 8yo me hoped for. #remember14
Thirty-six years later, we still remember. Fourteen women, killed because they were women. We honour their dreams, their strength, and their right to live freely. We must never stop fighting gender-based violence.

I feel very fortunate that I was able to follow good scientific evidence and access the shingles vaccine early due to immunocompromise, however, if you're getting this one, I advise you take the next day off because wow does it pack a wallup. I'll take the short term pain for long term gain but wow.

In today's episode of almost killed by a driver wielding a car: hi-viz adult walking on the left most side of a wide, suburban, low speed limit, paved road with no sidewalks, on a clear day. 2 vehicles + 2 atvs (not allowed on road but always are) blow through a 4 way stop and 2 aggressive drivers.
