The latest in our "AI, technology & society" series, this month's LSE iQ podcast asks what the environmental costs of AI really are with @couldrynick.bsky.social, @eugeniedugoua.bsky.social & @cearacarney.bsky.social
Producer Anna Bevan also visits a data centre in Slough. Really worth a listen.
Is AI destroying the planet?
This episode explores the AI sustainability paradox: can AI be both a climate solution and a climate problem?

1/ NEW RESEARCH: Our study reveals 46% of pesticides embedded in EU agricultural consumption originate from imports, despite imports constituting only 17% of consumption. This includes substances prohibited in the EU. This regulatory gap fuels leakage effects and hurts EU competitiveness 🧵

"Drill, baby drill" is dead, at least for now. Consulting firm Rystad Energy estimates the price that many U.S. oil players need to break even—including dividend payments to shareholders and debt-service expenses—is above $62 a barrel. #EconSky #Energy t.ly/unzO1

There are now more than 200 million heat pumps installed around the world.

It is a mature technology but we need to see the number of heat pumps to triple to meet the climate scenarios.

I think in economics we are getting to an interesting place of (relative) epistemic humility about merhods #EconSky. Theory first reigned, then the credibility revolution arrived, and some took it to extremes. And now we are back to a more balanced approach of methodological pluralism. Thoughts?

"A good precisely specified method can establish only results of a certain kind. So, if you privilege some set of methods—for instance claiming they are best or most rigorous...—you necessarily thereby circumscribe the kinds of results that can be established."

and never know what kinds we miss
