Similar situation here. You probably also do this too but I also learned to set expectations way in advance. No sudden demands!

Your mileage may vary but what I’ve found that works is saying no/imposing limits to as few things as possible and then just absolutely refusing to budge on the few things I think actually matter.

I don’t doubt it! This is the first year I’ve ever asked them to help shovel. After a decade plus of doing all the things all by myself, my will to not be responsible for every single thing without any help ever is stronger.

That is brutal. Do they have outdoor shelters at the bus stops? Or do you drop them off at the bus stop in a heated car? And will they wear a coat? Our temps don’t get that low thankfully but even four degrees my two refuse to wear more than a hoodie
