I am a climate scientist, focused on paleoclimate, sea level change and the evolution of Quaternary glaciations. I reconstruct ice sheets using glacial isostatic adjustment and ice sheet modelling. In Japan but have been all over the place. 🇨🇦🇯🇵🇦🇺🇩🇪🇸🇪

Hello Bluesky folks! I am interested in meeting people working on climate, sea level and ice sheets, especially with reference to the past. Please visit my website for a larger bio! raisedbeaches.net/about/

👋 Hello, Bluesky! We’re Radiocarbon, an international peer-reviewed journal (since 1959) dedicated to advancing radiocarbon research, from calibration and chronology to applications across archaeology, geology, environmental science, and more. We’re glad to be here. #Radiocarbon #Geochronology

I too was warned about the possibility of this kind of thing happening. This was the first time I have seen it so explicit, though. I don't even know the authors of this particular paper! Lots of people have found my work useful, so I am not bothered by this.

In September, I participated in The Ark of Coral Reefs cruise, which commemorated the 10th anniversary of the Kikai Institute for Coral Reef Sciences. I have written a blog post about the first day of the cruise, including why I think Kikaijima is so interesting. raisedbeaches.net/2025/10/05/t...
The Ark of Coral Reefs cruise – Day 1
From September 19 to 28, 2025, I had the great pleasure to attend the The Ark of Coral Reefs cruise. It was a cruise to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the founding of the Kikai Institute for C…

Tiny fossils called foraminifera lie buried in marine sediments.
Their shells display astonishing diversity from spiraling forms to chambered clusters and even architectures that resemble miniature buildings.
But what if this morphological variety could be explained by only a few simple rules? 1/n

That is awful! I hope you don't let that get to you.

Kikaijima is an island in southern Japan that is rimmed with coral reefs, but it is the fossils of corals that are everywhere on the island that really interests me.

Believe me, I really doubt it was a mistake.

Have you ever read a paper where it is obvious that they purposely ignored your work, not even citing it, despite the obvious connection to it? They even cited a paper that commented on my paper. I am more amused than anything, but I was wondering if anyone else had this experience. #AcademicChatter

I suppose you are right, lol

As someone who first started on the Internet in the late 90s, this is how it was back then. You have to explore to find people who have shared interest. I think it makes for a healthier Internet, because we have more control over what we see.

All that said, my posts on Mastodon usually get shared more there than on Bluesky, even though I have 3 times the followers here. The audience is smaller than it appears.

After what happened to Twitter, and what I see is happening to Bluesky, my perspective is that having a big public megasite run by American tech people is not a good way to have discourse. A smaller network of people with similar interests leads to a more rewarding experience.

For no reason at all, I wanted to point out that Fediscience is a great, independent social media network for scientists. We have some nice conversations there! fediscience.org/about

🧊Our researchers have just finished analysing ancient Antarctic ice spanning 1.2 million years of climate history!

The Beyond EPICA project extends the ice core climate record by 400,000 years, helping us to understand long-term climate patterns and improve future predictions.

I watched the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "Family" last night (one of the best in the series). They make it pretty explicit in that episode that geophysics must be a required subject for Starfleet officers. #StarTrek
