Porcelaneous foraminifera are so named because their shells have a smooth, milky-white appearance that resembles fine porcelain or ceramic ware. In addition to porcelaneous forms, foraminifera are also classified into hyaline, agglutinated, soft-shelled, and naked types

Fascinating thread! Evolution is such an amazing mechanism that uses small changes to create incredible complexity.

Tiny fossils called foraminifera lie buried in marine sediments.
Their shells display astonishing diversity from spiraling forms to chambered clusters and even architectures that resemble miniature buildings.
But what if this morphological variety could be explained by only a few simple rules? 1/n

However, it fails to reproduce genera such as genus Lenticulina, which arrange their apertures in ways that lengthen the internal pathways.
Perhaps these species prioritize safety over efficiency. They designing shells that slow the inflow of external materials and potential threats.

Morphospace of foraminiferal shells: results from the moving reference model
The moving reference model of foraminiferal tests (shells) is based on principal morphogenetic rules revealed from real foraminifera. The model has introduced apertures as moving reference points base...

The repetition of this process determines the overall shell shape.

The model defines morphology through a few geometric parameters:

Growth Factor (GF): How much each new chamber expands
Translation Factor (TF): How far apart successive chambers are positioned

Four parameters that define the shape
Tyszka’s model reconstructs how a foraminifer builds each new chamber.
The organism extends its pseudopodia fan-like from the aperture, forms a thin membrane ballooning outward, and then deposits calcium carbonate on that surface to create a new wall.

In the past, researchers tried to reproduce these forms using logarithmic spirals. Equations that describe seashells because foraminiferal shells often resemble them.
However, such approaches failed to generalize across the full diversity of foraminiferal shapes.

In rotaliid foraminifera, despite their wide range of shapes, simulations have shown that their morphology can, in fact, be described using only a handful of parameters. 2/n
