If you get the chance, grab it. They are something that is impossible to grasp how big they are just looking at pictures. Of course, I'm biased, I love trees of all kinds!

Sequoias are awesome in the true sense of the word! All you can do is look up in awe and wonder when you see them.

Fascinating thread! Evolution is such an amazing mechanism that uses small changes to create incredible complexity.

Tiny fossils called foraminifera lie buried in marine sediments.
Their shells display astonishing diversity from spiraling forms to chambered clusters and even architectures that resemble miniature buildings.
But what if this morphological variety could be explained by only a few simple rules? 1/n

You'll put down strangers,
Kill them, cut their throats, possess their houses,
And lead the majesty of law in line,
To slip him like a hound.

We Have at least 70? years of science fiction exploring this proposition and all reaching the same conclusions as Josie.

Which I only bring up because everyone involved in this AI thing is a science fiction fan, but not one who understands what they read.

It is morally wrong to want a computer to be sentient. If you owned a sentient thing, you would be a slaver. If you want sentient computers to exist, you just want to create a new kind of slavery. The ethics are as simple as that. Sorry if this offends

The fact they jumped straight to AI actors modeled after women when, if I’m not mistaken, male actors are a higher labor cost kind of says it all doesn’t it,

Really good article. I've read a little bit about the history, but this is the most comprehensive I'veseen, and has additional reading. Now I have to go listen to some music!

Some rare and remarkable processes are taking place this week, that we are not likely to observe for a long time!
These 2 Atlantic hurricanes are closer than any since at least the 1960s. They are now connected - in each other’s orbit, pivoting. Follow along 1/

I honestly don't think everyone talks enough about how amazing it was when the world came together to fix the hole in the ozone layer, so I wrote this:

It's a good reminder of what we're capable of.

I saw that just as I was posting, and really thought about not adding, but I was interested in how the University structured their study post, so decided to link that too. I like reading formal studies for in depth information, but the structure can be pretty dense to get through. Good compromise

We have so many bumbles after years of planting native flowers for 3 season bloom. Also have about half acre of woods behind for nesting. Planting for pollinators pays off, native bees do 95%+ of our veg garden pollination

A study of 4 species of #bumblebees indicated that they foraged within 800 metres of their nest and this foraging range decreased with more availability of food sources and with less fragmentation of land.

imagine if a family of beavers randomly showed up right now and finished whatever thing you've been putting off
In early 2025, beaver activity in the Brdy Protected Landscape Area, Czech Republic, contributed to the restoration of a wetland ecosystem. A family of beavers constructed a series of dams that coincidentally accomplished environmental goals of the Czech government, which had delayed its proposed project since 2018 for bureaucratic and financial reasons. The beaver-built dams saved the Czech government approximately US$1.2 million,

We have a handy chart...
Photograph of a three-panel meme. The left panel shows a smiling man in a light blue button-up shirt, with the word "MARRY" below him. The middle panel shows a serious-looking man in a dark suit and red tie, with the word "FUCK" below him. The right panel shows a black and white wire-haired dog lying in green grass, with the word "KILL" below it.

Perhaps. But then there were kittens."
