The government has pledged to halve violence against women and girls. But this can't be done while lies about its causes are endorsed by those in positions of power.

Weaponising violence against women and girls to further a racist agenda is #NotInOurName

The racist weaponisation of survivors’ trauma is having horrifying impacts on communities across the country.

We welcome new police VAWG lead Helen Millichap's comments. The evidence shows the vast majority of perpetrators of violence against women and girls are known to the victim.
Top cop warns of 'distraction' from threat facing women
Helen Millichap told Sky News that the "real threat" of violence against women and girls comes from a "multitude" of places, not just asylum seekers.

Changing the culture of policing means creating an environment in which victims and whistleblowers feel safe to report misconduct and abuse, and that officers who dismiss, blame or abuse those they have a duty to protect face meaningful consequences rather than the impunity they have long enjoyed.
evawuk.bsky.social
Police officers hold a particular position of power and authority over the public.

Recent years have exposed the scale of abuse of this power to harm women and girls.

Tonight's BBC #Panorama exposes that despite some efforts to address this, there remains a long way to go.
evawuk.bsky.social
There remains a deeply rooted culture of institutional racism and misogyny within the Met, which the force has yet to properly address.

These latest revelations are appalling and just a snapshot of what is happening in forces across the country.

We need to see transformation across policing, public services and society as a whole to shift away from a culture of disbelief and victim-blaming, towards one where victims and supported and protected rather than further harmed. Survivors deserve better.

We stand in solidarity with the victim-survivors of this appalling male violence. Too many women and girls are disbelieved when they come forward to report rape and sexual abuse, and failed by the public agencies meant to protect them. This is unacceptable

Cyberflashing has sadly become normalised, and we hope that making it a priority offence under the Online Safety Act will increase awareness and encourage action and meaningful consequences, so that it is no longer tolerated in society.
evawuk.bsky.social
We welcome cyberflashing being made a priority offence in the #OnlineSafetyAct, which will require tech companies to do more to identify it.

This must translate into stronger preventative action to stop it from happening and protect women and girls online.

Specialist frontline services are facing increasing uncertainty around funding while demand for their support grows.

On top of this, over a year into its term we remain unclear about the government's plans for tackling abuse as we are yet to see its new VAWG strategy.

Great to join @rapecrisis.bsky.social @alexdaviesjones.bsky.social & School of Sex Education at the @womensbudgetgrp.bsky.social event on making halving VAWG a reality. If the gov is serious about committing to its pledge, it must listen to VAWG orgs and take an urgent approach rooted in prevention

Great piece and insight from colleagues in @refugecharity.bsky.social team supporting victims of domestic abuse, who are increasingly subjected to perpetrators' use of technology to coerce, control and harm.

Over a year ago the government was elected on a mission to halve VAWG, but it is yet to publish its strategy.

This is a vital opportunity to reset its approach. We call on government to listen to VAWG orgs, centre women and girls and ensure that VAWG is a political priority.

Today on #NationalDayOfRemembrance we are remembering victims of fatal domestic abuse, including those who die by suicide.
Domestic abuse significantly increases suicide risk.

More Black & minoritised women take their own lives following abuse than are killed by a perpetrator. Yet their suicides remain largely invisible in data, policy & services. Structural inequalities - racism, immigration restrictions, lack of specialist ‘by and for’ support - trap women in danger.

Warning signs are too often minimised by agencies. Missed chances to protect mean preventable deaths. In one case study, a woman suffered 19 years of abuse. 4 recorded overdoses. Distress dismissed as “family tensions.”
Nine months after disclosing assault & suicidal thoughts, she died by suicide.

❌ Her story is a reminder: specialist services are a matter of life or death. Imkaan continues to call for action:
⚫ Recognise suicide as a VAWG issue
⚫ Track suicides linked to abuse, incl. ethnicity data
⚫ Ensure intersectional & trauma-informed post-death investigations
⚫ Invest in specialist ‘by and for’ services
