Hubble Chases a Small Stellar Galaxy in the Hunting Dog - From Goddard Space Flight Center - https://flic.kr/p/PTHCMo
On a clear evening in April of 1789, the renowned astronomer William Herschel continued his unrelenting survey of the night sky, hunting for new cosmic objects — and found cause to celebrate! He spotted this bright spiral galaxy, named NGC 4707, lurking in the constellation of Canes Venatici or The Hunting Dog. NGC 4707 lies roughly 22 million light-years from Earth. Over two centuries later, the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope is able to "chase down" and view the same galaxy in far greater detail than Herschel could, allowing us to appreciate the intricacies and characteristics of NGC 4707 as never before. This striking image comprises observations from Hubble’s Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS), one of a handful of high-resolution instruments currently aboard the space telescope. Herschel himself reportedly described NGC 4707 as a “small, stellar” galaxy; while it is classified as a spiral (type Sm), its overall shape, center, and spiral arms are very loose and undefined, and its central bulge is either very small or non-existent. It instead appears as a rough sprinkling of stars and bright flashes of blue on a dark canvas. The blue smudges seen across the frame highlight regions of recent or ongoing star formation, with newborn stars glowing in bright, intense shades of cyan and turquoise. Two galaxies connected by a long, thin stream of gas and stars that form a vertical line. The first galaxy, at the top of the frame, appears to be a disturbed spiral galaxy. It has a swirling disk made of a haze of pale yellow stars accented by faint brown dust lanes. The outer parts of the disk are surrounded by a haze of pale blue-white stars, including a tidal tail or arm that swirls from about the 3 o'clock to about 12 o'clock position. A long, thin, translucent line, made of a haze of stars and gas, connects the bottom of the top galaxy to the top of its companion below. The second galaxy is near the bottom of the frame. It is roughly circular and has a bright, pale yellow center that gradually fades out and becomes more translucent near its edges. The thin line of stars and gas appears to emerge from the bottom of the galaxy, arcing slightly up as it exits. The black background of space is filled with stars and tiny background galaxies.

The Spiral Planetary Nebula, NGC 5189 - From Rolf Wahl Olsen - https://flic.kr/p/pxm9dg
The colourful and intricately shaped Spiral Planetary Nebula (NGC 5189) is located up to 3000 light years away in the Southern constellation Musca. It is a very complex nebula with a morphology not well understood by scientists. Several expanding bubbles of gas appear in its centre, emitting a predominantly blue-green light from ionised Oxygen. Surrounding these bubble structures lies the large sweeping spiral shape, brilliantly shining with a magenta hue from ionised Hydrogen, similar to that of traditional emission nebulae. The full frame image shows the small nebula nestled amongst countless reddish stars in Musca, a densely populated region of our Milky Way galaxy. The majority of the image data was taken on 19th March 2014, two days after full Moon. This image shows a portion of an enigmatic formation called banded terrain, which is only observed in the northwest of the Hellas basin. This basin was formed by a giant impact around 4 billion years ago.

This pair of galaxies fits almost perfectly in one frame from Hubble's ACS. What caught my attention is the one on the lower right, NGC 1375. The X shaped nuclei found in some galaxies interests me. So far, I've only seen them in edgewise galaxies. The effect viewed from face on may be subtle enough that it is very difficult to notice or they could be bar structures I've failed to make the connection to so far. They are also called boxy or peanut-shaped but when imaged with Hubble the X becomes obvious. See this paper for information from actual scientists rather than my own novice observations. I did some extra processing to make the strange nucleus of NGC 1375 more apparent. These galaxies were imaged for Proposal 10911. Red: HST_10911_01_ACS_WFC_F814W_sci Green: Pseudo Blue: HST_10911_01_ACS_WFC_F475W_sci North is NOT up. It is 39.1° counter-clockwise from up.

This enhanced color panorama was taken by Curiosity's Left Mastcam after sunset on Sol 3724 (27 January, 2023). It shows an iridescent high altitude cloud, likely made from CO2 ices. The sun has already set on the ground, but continues to illuminate this cloud which is likely at 60-80km altitude. The iridescence (rainbow effect) is caused by diffraction at sub µm ice particles. The individual images were color calibrated to approximate what the human eye would see. The panorama was further enhanced to emphasise cloud structure and subtle color variations.
