Last year 135 professional football players – with a combined 2,700 international caps – called on FIFA to drop Aramco as a partner.

Ultimately this is about providing a platform for a company committed to expandin crude oil production and resisting the commitment to transition away from fossil fuels that was agreed at COP28.

Promoting Aramco also means promoting the Saudi Arabian state.

Football, cricket and motor racing authorities have completely ignored warnings from UN experts about Aramco's impact on the planet and humans.

But they are taking $millions to promote Aramco, the world's biggest oil company which has a history of lobbying to delay climate action.

A Israeli academic asked his followers on X which sanction would really convince ordinary Israelis that they are isolated internationally.
"Expulsion from football tournaments" was the most popular answer, followed by "ending visa-free travel to Europe"
