Annoyed at horse trading in Ottawa? Puzzled how could 1-2 MPs transform a govt from shaky to monarch like absolute? You should thank our outdated First Past The Post electoral system where all votes are NOT equal, fringe is amplified and hyper partisanship is rewarded with power. We deserve better.

One MP switching parties should not be able to decide whether a government gets majority power.

First-past-the-post turns small seat shifts into absolute power, even without majority support.

Proportional representation keeps majority power tied to how people actually voted.

Transit City. Relief Line. Eglinton West Subway. Scarborough LRT. They were all proposed, then cancelled or rewritten. That is first-past-the-post at work.

With proportional representation long term projects survive elections, and the city would have a much stronger network today.

Did you notice all the smiles on Liberal MP's faces? This is why they wouldn't want to change systems. FPTP delivers majority power, which suits them just fine. Proportional representation delivers coalition governments, power to the people, not short term dictatorships.

When BC held a Citizens’ Assembly, its proposal earned more support than most governments ever do. It only failed because politicians set the bar arbitrarily high.

Now a new Assembly has been recommended. Time to give people a fair path to real proportional representation.

The fate of the BC Liberals is a reminder that blocking reform does not protect parties. First past the post eventually turns on everyone.

A new Citizens Assembly offers a fair way to rebuild the rules so voters and parties alike get real representation.

In 2005 the BC Liberals imposed a 60 percent threshold on the Citizens Assembly proportional representation referendum which received 58 percent and therefore failed. In 2018 the BC Liberals campaigned against proportional representation during another referendum and it failed. In 2024 now rebranded as BC United the party withdrew from the provincial election and endorsed the BC Conservatives to avoid first past the post vote splitting leaving their supporters without meaningful representation. The bottom section states that the BC Liberals might still be competitive today if they had supported a more democratic system and warns parties not to repeat the mistake.

Never give up, never give in. We need to change our voting system to PR. Period. The Electoral Reform Committee recommends a Citizens Assembly. Assembly will recommend which PR system to use with, hopefully, NO REFERENDUM!! Just implement!!

Let's hope the BC NDP follow through on both the recommendations for a Citizens' Assembly as well as enabling municipalities to upgrade their voting system. People don't realize how our electoral system is hindering us in every sector.

Voting systems matter, they have consequences, whether it's a seat count that wins a false majority or a proportional vote count, where # of votes = # of seats. Being able to vote also matters. Election Canada must fix this issue.

This is one of the issues that polarizes people: corruption made easy by first past the post. People get fed up BUT what can they do but watch it happen. That's when things can get radical. More polarization occurs. This isn't going away, we need the fix. Demand...Proportional representation!!

When a party wins total control with far less than half the vote, it becomes far too easy to target political opponents. That is the corruption built into first-past-the-post.

Proportional representation brings real limits and real accountability.

This is what concentrated power produces. A party wins a majority with forty percent of the vote and suddenly has the freedom to target its opponents.

Proportional representation makes prevents this kind of behaviour by requiring broad, shared control of government.

He's right. The country needs fundamental democratic reform: starting with giving everyone a vote that truly counts.

When governments flip direction every cycle, long term projects stall and public trust sinks.

This is what first-past-the-post produces by design.

Proportional representation creates stable majorities that support consistent long term policy.

Shame on Doug Ford, Danielle Smith, François Legault and Scott Moe. This could be avoided with proportional representation where every vote counts and would stop these wannabe autocrats from trampling people's rights. None of them obtained majority votes, just majority seats with FPTP. @fairvote.ca
