An extremely round, tiny bird with buffy belly, grey back, white cheek, black cap and tiny black beak. Bird is perched on a nearly vertical bare branch that crosses the frame from top to bottom.

This (female?) goldfinch has a habit of chasing other birds away from the feeder. If it’s already occupied she’ll wait on a nearby branch. Are goldfinches territorial or is this bird just weird?
PS how do you tell non-breeding female and male American goldfinches apart?
