a) Hoffman ain't reliable, but he ain't boring.

b) I'd pay good money for boring right now.

Found several freelance clients, including one for whom I covered my last E3 in Los Angeles and with whom I kept working for almost a decade.

Streaky guy. Sometimes he'll lose his way for five weeks at a time. But when he's on, he's darn near superhuman.

On my way to pick up my preorder (as well as, in all likelihood, an unreasonable number of other books) right now!

LLMs out to gaslight authors about their own writing.

And here we go. I never wrote this article, and yet it is cited here.

And of course, it sounds so plausible, I seriously checked whether I had forgotten it, or the footnote was slightly wrong.

Stop. Sanewashing. Fascism!

What, are you afraid that he's going to take away all your funding if you're not servile enough? Oh, about that...

I just saw someone use the abbreviation “AI;DR” and I’ll be laughing for a while.

I know one person who never speaks first on any topic, because if they did they might accidentally agree with what the other person is about to say.

Never saw Titanic or Top Gun. Never owned a game console until the PS1, when I'd been working in gamedev for years. Never got into Michael Jackson, Madonna or Prince. Kind of culturally out to lunch, is what I'm saying.

Inspired by a post I just saw in which someone admitted they hadn’t seen a single episode of Friends nor the film Love Actually… what cultural hole do you have that’s a bit weird for your generation?

I’ll go first: I haven’t seen Dirty Dancing.

Most of the decisions you've made before your thirtieth birthday can be reversed if they no longer work for you. I started a new career at 35, got a PhD at 48 and just finished writing my first novel in my fifties. Can't wait to see what comes next.

Those who are 35+, what advice do you have for people just entering their 30s?

7 strikeouts in 3 innings, the ALDS against the Yankees. This is something from a 22 year-old in his 4th MLB game.

Finished a 11,700 word novelette in fifty hours, split over five weeks. Not bad, considering that the 94,000 word novel took three years!

Now, let's work through the novel's beta reader reports, make a last pass of edits, and start looking for an agent, shall we?

Part of same thing "it seems like in humans consciousness just appeared when sufficiently complex systems. So you can't rule it out for LLMs"

Yes we can. The way it makes mistakes is exactly indicative of nonconciousness.
Of a lack of any sense of comprehension of its inputs.
And of self awareness.

Six weeks ago, I picked up a year-old tawny owl with a broken leg off the main road near our home and dropped him off at our nearest vet.

After a few days, I received one of the most bizarre phone calls I’ve ever had, asking “So when are you coming to pick up your owl?” 🧵
