Collective Eggspectation

Bird Tree had been living in my head for years before it was drawn into existence.

SURFACE is the only one of the three dive from a reference. It's my feet sticking out of a bath, directly influenced by the Frieda Khalo painting "What the water gave me".

MISFIT is a drawing of a real memory, of being twelve years old, in gym class, looking down at my knees and suddenly being hyper aware of how much larger than other girls my age I was.

Category is FEET.
It's three for one today, with three drawings, each framed and ready for a new home.

ZEALOUS was drawn in a single continuous line. It's a picture imagining medieval folks in the grip of a magical dancing fever, caused by hallucinogenic mushrooms.

The one time I've ever eaten langestines was at a neuroscience dinner many moons ago. By pure happenstance, I ended up sat opposite the renowned neuroscientist Michael Brecht, and we ate too many langestines and chatted about neural circuits in developing cortical columns.

Day 10 of the #ArtAdventCalendar

Large Langs
Giclée print on acid-free archival paper
Limited edition of 100
20 x 15cm

These langestines were fresh at the fishmonger at the Leith Market. They looked so bright and peachy-orange against the blue of the ice-filled boxes.

Day 9 of the #ArtAdventCalendar

Bees in Cornfield
Oil on canvas
80x30cm
Framed

This painting has been one of my most exhibited, and I definitely should have got more prints made, but i prefer to keep my print editions limited.

Blue and orange are complimentary colours that I love and return to time and time again. This painting is all about the objects that I collect, the things I find joy in, and how the assignment of value to different objects is arbitrary.

Day 8 of the #ArtAdventCalendar:

Breadcrumbs, Objects of Value
Oil on Canvas
90x90cm
Framed in cream wood

At nearly a square metre in size, this oil painting is the largest artwork I have framed in my studio, looking for a new owner.

#ArtAdventCalendar day 7
The Corn Dolly Clock
Pen on paper
70x50cm
2024

I put this on display today at my studio today. It was originally drawn for the Foik folly exhibition at Sett Studios, a celebration of all things pagan and strange and folky and spooky.

All of the prints sold long ago, and the two other originals have also found homes. Now these two, Hubble and Halley, remain. I like to think they got there before the astronauts, and decided to photobomb just for the fun of it.

Moongoats
Pen and watercolour on paper
Mounted and framed
£150 each.

#ArtAdventCalendar day 6: MOONGOATS.

The moongoats were painted at my kitchen table when I lived in a flat at the bottom of Leith Walk during lockdown of 2020. The moongoats were a source of amusing respite, a way to get out of my head and off of this planet.

Charcoal isn't often my material of choice, but for here it was perfect.

Thank you to Adam for a beautiful concert, to the staff, volunteers and audience of Pianodrome who make me feel so welcome. Check out the concerts that Pianodrome have coming up, it's a truly magical place.

Today, I went to the Pianodrome in Bruntsfield to sit and listen and sketch. Today's musician was Adam Muir, a wonderfully versatile pianist. I used charcoal and chalk to work in quick expressive lines that captured the energetic and varied repertoire.

The original painting is probably my current favourite in the studio. An explosion of red and blue that seemed to just appear out of my paintbrush without very much influence or control. One of those paintings that isn't so much painted as channelled, brought into existence from some other place.

On which I exploit the power of the tired hound to show off my latest giclée print.

#artadventcalendar for the 3rd of December: blue ink birds.

As I've shared my art with more people, I've come to understand the power of knowing your audiences, plural. Then comes a conflict to be resolved, how to make art that is interesting and authentic but is also able to find a home.
December 3, 2025 at 7:08 PM
That was the year I finished my PhD in neuroscience, so I was somewhat distracted. I remember being afraid that I'd lost the ability to make art and it would never come back, and I think all my frustration at not having the time to create came out in this drawing.

Christmas #ArtAdventCalendar day 2:

If I remember correctly, this was the only thing I made for the whole of 2018.
