At a recent council meeting, an amendment highlighted the messy politics around planning exemptions for asylum shelters. “It was a little bit ill-informed, but they were in a rush to, you know, counterbalance Mr Pepper,” says independent Councillor Mannix Flynn.

A more targeted measure that would deliver better value for small businesses and the taxpayer was available.

This is an eye-watering tax cut that will go directly into the pockets of big chain restaurants. This tax cut would fund the equivalent of building Luas Finglas every year.
greenpartyie.bsky.social
It's official. They're giving big restaurant chains a massive tax cut, costing nearly €700m in the #VAT cut to hospitality.

For that kind of money you could:

👨‍👩‍👦‍👦 Bring in a second tier of child benefit - lifting 55,000 children out of poverty
🚌 Make public transport free

Drones have a value in our society, but they are a really new technology and there has to be rules about how they work.

That's why I have drafted a law to regulate delivery drones, addressing the issues raised in Dublin 15 and that the Govt have so far ignored.

Somebody will get back to you, council officials repeatedly assured councillors with questions at climate action meeting. “How this has been managed is an absolute joke,” said a frustrated Lord Mayor Ray McAdam.

We’re deeply saddened to hear of Manchán’s passing. A candidate for the party in 2016, he was more importantly a passionate and skilled advocate for Irish language and culture, and an appreciation for the beauty and importance of nature.

Ireland is in a corporation tax gold rush.

The Green Party is warning govt not to fritter it all away on scattergun projects and temporary measures - rather than saving for future challenges like climate change.

Here's our 9 key ideas for #Budget26:

A big blanket VAT cut? It's a bad idea. Better to give smarter, more targetted supports for cafes and restaurants.

We've set out a way to give more to small businesses while spending about a third of what the government are planning.

Be smart: do more, spend less!

The planning inspector for MetroLink taking economist Colm McCarthy to school. McCarthy has been objecting to rail investment in Dublin since the late 1970s.

Once again, MetroLink is not just about the airport.
feljin.ie
Yesss!! MetroLink has been approved by An Coimisiún Pleanála after three years in the planning process. 🥳 Still awaiting details and if any modifications were made. More later today.

What does a toilet, a car park, housing construction and the relocation of a crypt have in common? All climate action apparently.

Proper budgeting should be the basics of tackling any major problem. How can we hope to tackle climate action if we don't even know how much we're spending to tackle it?

Greens were proud to join @foeireland.bsky.social at their ‘Energy for Who?’ protest outside Leinster House.

Data centres used more power last year than all our urban homes combined.

Any future growth must:

✅ Economically benefit the State
✅ Run on renewables
✅ Stay within our climate targets

FF/FG: “There’s a €250m gap in funding public transport.”

We say it’s a gap in ambition.

When we should be pressing the gas on public transport, Govt. are hitting reverse.

I will sign off by adding that co-creation and community-led initiatives are not inherently bad.

Local volunteers brought the vision, staff worked to implement it and we're working together to build on it and create safe, local, community-managed plays streets that are open most of the year.
feljin.ie
These are all questions you could have asked before telling us we should be embarrassed to be a part of it. I'm happy to sit down and discuss with the committee of IDE.
feljin.ie
That's exactly what we're doing 🤦
feljin.ie
I have huge respect for @irishdocsenv.bsky.social but it's really not a good look for their social media output to be dominated by negative opinions of one member even in the face of progress — especially on the work of other volunteers. It's depressing and discouraging to be honest.
feljin.ie
Staff in DCC are very excited to build on this and we're meeting again soon to do just that.

It can be frustrating seeing community-led initiatives that are achieving progress being criticised but even more frustrating when it was explained before someone wrote their blog putting it down.
feljin.ie
I worked really hard for this alongside a lot of incredible volunteers to bring together different divisions in DCC. It was never planned as a once-off event. It was a step and an opportunity to showcase our vision to more people.

This was all explained to the author before he wrote his blog.

We should be embarrassed that people in Dublin, especially children, are only given the chance to enjoy their streets safely once a year.

This is a powerful and thought-provoking Substack piece, well worth reading.

Dubliners, and communities across the country, deserve so much better.
olaln.bsky.social
I am sometimes criticised for being too negative and for failing to see the progress happening around Dublin. While that may certainly be true at times, I think the far greater issue in Dublin is that we tend to accept even the smallest progress as a major victory.

My most recent Substack!
