Many are the stately homes of Britain cursed with an apparition that foretells a death. This placid drawing of the Combermere Abbey, #Cheshire, ghost fails to reflect a dramatic 1870 account of it running round and round the eyewitness's bed "in a wild and distressed way".
#PhantomsFriday #folklore
An 1898 illustration by A S Hartrick, scanned from a copy of Harmondsworth's Magazine. It shows a woman in the contemporary Victorian dress, carrying candle and shocked to see the translucent apparition of a girl in an outfit dating perhaps from the 17th century.

My great-grandad's stepfather Samuel Heap. Reprimanded by the Chief Constable more than once e.g. for being found in bed drunk and "behind a haystack in the company of PC Arthur" he was also commended by the Chief Constable for apprehending 7 deserters and obtained 4 good conduct badges. #genealogy

Stained Glass Window, Cheshire.
Lovely orange medieval glass in a plain leaded window at a country church. The church was built in 1511, but this German stained glass was a replacement for some heraldic glass moved elsewhere.

A colour photograph in portrait format. It shows a plain leaded window in a church. Added to the central section is this amazing medieval German glass in shades of orange and red.
