Call for scholars in political behavior (broadly understood) studying Central & Eastern Europe: workshop hosted by
@eui-eu.bsky.social, June 19-20. 2nd edition. Participants from the region can have their travel & accommodation fully covered. Apply by 28/3. More info: www.eui.eu/en/projects/...
The Department of Political and Social Sciences (SPS) at the European University Institute is pleased to announce the second edition of the workshop on political behaviour in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). The workshop understands political behaviour broadly and is open to papers studying public opinion and attitudes, voting, elections, political parties, inter-group relations, and political participation. The goal of this event is to bring together scholars, both from the East and the West, who empirically study political realities in CEE through within-country, between-country, or between-region (e.g., East-West) comparison. Papers investigating general research questions that are not specific to CEE are also very welcome as long as they comprise a significant empirical component from the region (e.g., half of the studied cases are from CEE). The workshop embraces all methodological approaches, but submissions that employ quantitative or mixed methods will be given priority. Each accepted paper will be thoroughly discussed, and the workshop will offer ample opportunities for establishing professional connections and collaborations. @eui-sps.bsky.social‬

What explains the rising turnout in recent EP elections?

@filipkostelka.bsky.social & @evakrejcova.bsky.social find that it's the strength of Eurosceptic parties at the national level. The more seats they hold in national parliament, the more mobilizing the EP election is

I have been at every single EPSA conference since EPSA was founded. I am excited to attend EPSS 2026 in Dublin - below some clarifications on EPSA and EPSS
epssnet.bsky.social
EPSA have announced that they will hold a conference in July 2026.

😵‍💫 We understand that there might be some confusion about EPSS and EPSA.

👉🏽 So we thought we would clarify some things.

Please share this thread. It is important that political scientists, in Europe and across the world, understand why EPSS exists and why we are encouraging people to attend our inaugural conference, in Belfast next June.

🗳️Satisfaction boosts turnout, or voting boosts satisfaction?

➡️@filipkostelka.bsky.social L.Linek @jrovny.bsky.social @skvrnami.bsky.social find both in Central-Eastern Europe. Satisfaction spurs turnout, voting raises satisfaction, especially for winners www.cambridge.org/core/journal... #FirstView

Prof Skocpol making a crucial point here. The centralized police. And then the lawless quasipolice who guard the camps. Trump’s death bill moves the US towards those two thresholds, well known from Germany in the 1930s.

Key takeaways:
1. Elections help legitimize democracy for all citizens—not just winners.
2. Don’t use post-election surveys to infer pre-election attitudes or changes.
3. The satisfaction-participation nexus may be specific in CEE compared to the West.
Thank you for your attention.
filipkostelka.bsky.social
We also study voting in two-round systems: Compared to abstainers (whose satisfaction also rises), only backing the final winner boosts satisfaction—regardless of when support began. Voting for the winner in R2 is as satisfying as backing the winner in both rounds. 7/n
filipkostelka.bsky.social
We find that pre-election satisfaction is positively correlated with later (self-reported) participation. However, for many reasons discussed in the conclusion, we are reluctant to think that satisfaction drives participation in this region (or elsewhere). 6/n
