Israel and Hamas have agreed a deal to release all the remaining hostages held in Gaza as part of the first phase of US President Donald Trump’s plan to end the devastating two-year war in the strip. on.ft.com/47hImRa

I think the problem about brands getting involved in, let’s broadly call it politics, is that the only thing most people will remember is there was controversy. OK I don’t eat ice cream much but I am online a lot + I honestly don’t remember which side B&J are on (+ still can’t tell from this piece)

Think Miller needs to send in a few more battalions. Maybe Hegseth can send some elite units. Things are getting dangerous in Portland

The best thing they could do would be to put duty on alcohol bought at supermarkets but not at establishments. Encourage people to get together and not drink at home.

Am trying to understand a world in which there has not been a law to shoot down any unidentified / unannounced flying object since like the 1970s?

Yeah I know so many people who came down with something really nasty this year.

My technique is still rubbish so I spend a lot on strings to make it sound nice(r) 😀 www.paganino.com/strings/viol...

Ok thanks. From memory last year they told me to turn up after October so that they would have the latest.

From s/o who regrets giving up violin as a kid + then took it up in her 50s: if you think he will stick with it spend a few hundred in € equivalent plus a decent bow. If he really sticks with it you will be getting into the €1000s. Good sound imho is 80% technique, 10% string quality 10% bow quality

Anyway I am 59 and work for myself: do it again or wait a year? (Why am I asking: somewhere along the way, and despite myself, the Neanderthal part of my brain must have been poisoned by the RFK “it is bad for you” takes, so I feel myself resisting for no obvious reason.)

Rookie Q. Nov/Dec ‘24 I did double flu-Covid for 1st time. Am lucky enough to live in Cyprus where it’s free. Hadn’t done flu at all since 1996 but now I’m not so young. Part of me says “ah so I can wait another year before doing it again.” Part of me says “it doesn’t work that way go do it again.”

We are going to end up with the dissolution of the USA aren’t we? Rich blue states will form their own country.

Again, when we get through this, every one of these laws with aircraft carrier-sized loopholes allowing POTUS to be a dictator bc REASONS needs to go. Every one. They rested on shared norms that simply no longer exist. We need complete contracts now. Rules, not discretion.

White House officials have held increasingly serious discussions in recent days about President Donald Trump invoking the Insurrection Act, a rarely used 19th century law that gives the president the power to deploy active-duty troops inside the U.S. for law enforcement purposes

This is really one of the best charts by @ourworldindata.org 📊

Amazing how much research and work goes into creating a chart like this. And it's such a good insight into society.
What Americans die from and the causes of death the US media reports on.

4 stacked bar charts. showing in short that while heart diseases and cancer constitutes 55% of the causes of death, they receive about 7% of the media coverages. Homicide is under 1% but receives between 42% and 52%. Terrorisme barely registers in the causes of death, but gets between 11% and 18%.

The first stacked bar is causes of death in the US in 2023
Heart diseases 29%
Cancer 26%
Accidents 9.5%
Stroke 6.9%
Lower respiratory diseases (6.2%)
Alzheimer's disease (4.8%)
Diabetes (4.0%)
Kidney failure (2.4%)
Liver disease (2.2%)
Suicide (2.1%)
COVID-19 (2.1%)
Influenza/Pneumonia (1.9%)
Drug overdose (1.8%)
Homicide (<1%)
Terrorism (<0.001%)

Media coverage of these causes of death in 2023 in...
New York Times
Heart disease (2.8%)
Cancer (4.1%)
Accidents (9.7%)
Suicide (3.8%)
COVID-19 (5.3%)
Drug overdose (7.5%)
Homicide (42%)
Terrorism (18%)

Washington Post
Heart disease (2.9%)
Cancer (4.7%)
Accidents (5.9%)
Suicide (3.3%)
COVID-19 (7.9%)
Drug overdose (9.5%)
Homicide (46%)
Terrorism (12%)

Fox News
Heart disease (2.3%)
Cancer (3.8%)
Accidents (6.1%)
Suicide (4.1%)
COVID-19 (6.0%)
Drug overdose (9.8%)
Homicide (52%)
Terrorism (11%)

Note: Based on the share of causes of death in the US and the share of mentions for each of the causes in the New York Times, the Washington Post and Fox News. All values are normalized to 100%, so the shares are relative to all deaths caused by the 12 most common causes + drug overdoses, homicides and terrorism. These causes account for more than 75% of deaths in the US.
A "media mention" is a published article in one of the outlets which mentions the cause (e.g. "influenza) or related keywords (e.g. "flu") least twice.
Data sources: Media mentions from Media Cloud (2025); deaths data from the US CDC (2025) and Global Terrorism Index.

Result: no one but the already convinced will read it. All that effort for one big zero result.

“postponing would not have been a weakness — it would have been a moral act of strength. It would have slowed the spiral of polarisation, built trust, and thereby drawn more people in for the next protest. The deeper
⏸️ Why the Palestine protest should have paused — not out of fear, but out of love.
Once again, protestors across the UK are being arrested en masse for political protest. Their right to do is profoundly British – and must be protected

How is this repeatedly made into a policy issue - by *all* parties - when the blunt fact of the matter is that grown adults who are obliged to pay for their own education, and relentlessly pursued to repay their loans, should be able to study whatever the fuck they want.

Maybe the stock reply to such questions should be: is/are your hair/teeth/wrinkle-free forehead real? 😈

During the last parliament all of the great offices of state were at one point or another held by Tory MPs from ethnic minorities. Including the PRIME MINISTER.

Jenrick is trashing his own party’s record. He belongs in Reform.

I wonder if it is different when it is hard security: ‘Poland, Baltics, Germany + France think it is essential to cooperate with with big armies like Turkey on security but Greece + Cyprus say no’? Or whether it is at least a negotiating tactic coz GR + CY are currently blocking SAFE access for TR.

FWIW I was just sharing some stats I looked up. 😀

So based on the polling explained in this podcast by @quietriotpod.bsky.social it looks like Jenrick just lost even more voters to Liberals/Labour/Greens. Why: coz the only Conservative voters still standing just aren’t as fash as he is. podcasts.apple.com/cy/podcast/q...
