A throwaway comment about “well that’s weird” that evolved into harassment shows why I despise social media. It’s like walking on a tightrope to make sure you don’t say something that may seem offensive or a little mean and people will run right through it.

The solution here is simply NOT to post this "wow furries are weird and cringe, look at this weirdo!" stuff.

Furries are already under attack by the US government trying to make us out to be 'groomers' and 'dangers to children' and worse.

Please don't help the Trump administration attack furries.

There was a quote post of the modder's announcement telling them to kill themselves with over a quarter million likes on Twitter.

People were claiming the modder was a pedophile here on Bluesky, under Parker's threads.

Parker doesn't deserve to be harassed. Neither does the modder.

The fire was already burning on Twitter, but this caused it to spread to Bluesky, and a lot of ostensibly left-wing people started pouring gasoline on the fire.

You're allowed to think furries are weird, and you don't have to like us. But you also don't have to attack us either.

I do not believe Parker Malloy intended to cause a wave of anti-furry sentiment when she posted "why though?"

But it is definitely "atrocity tourism," and that's the result it brought about.

This doesn’t mean you can’t fight non-consensual or abuse content, like CSAM and revenge porn. Just as celebrating sexual pleasure does not mean defending sexual assault.

Also: sex is good! Masturbation is good! Connecting with your fantasies is good! Having access to authentic sexual expression that you might not have IRL is good!

Sexual repression is bad. Sexual shame is bad. Attempting to control other people’s sexuality is bad.

It’s not that complicated!

You can protest the bad while supporting the inherent worth of pornography.

The alternate option is that we repress it, and let the state or church or corporations decide what representations of consensual sex and pleasure are visible, acceptable and accessible.

Seeing people jump in to argue that we should defend porn b/c they use “porn” to go after other stuff. Yes … AND

“Porn” — explicit representation of sex — is good, in the same way that books are good. Some authors are offensive, but as a whole, it’s good to let people access their sexuality.

Boy nothing gets me blocked more than defending the right to represent your sexuality, or access to representations of it.

Government restrictions on speech, even “harmful” and “dangerous” speech, always turns out to be more dangerous and harmful than the speech itself.
