How about a 1946 Czechoslovakian animated short film about anti-fascism? 15 minutes long and rather wondrous.

This is echoing what many have been advocating for decades. Focusing on interventions around admissions is pointless if wider inequalities remain and efforts aren't made from the start of school to support pupils.

Poverty makes a huge difference here, but other barriers also remain firmly in place

V interesting on how applicants' choice of unis contributes to mismatches, emphasising students' differing risk aversion.

As a parent of a YP making these choices rn, the school steer on making "insurance choices" is a huge influence. Students are applying for the 1st time, school guidance is key

It's alarming how many people need to hear this: racism is not the natural and inevitable response to the presence of (the wrong number of) racialised Others. It is a learned response, and as such it is contestable and replaceable.

This is anti-racism 101. Entry level stuff.
paulbrand.bsky.social
This is first time I’ve heard the govt making the Labour argument for controlling immigration.

Mahmood argues that controlling our borders is good for race relations, because uncontrolled immigration is feeding far right rhetoric and tensions.

Expect to hear a lot more of that.

This is WONDERFUL! Putting it on my list for when I'm feeling very ambitious.

Living the good life, I just made this plum almond cake. Turned tasteless plums into a piece of magic and happy afternoon 😋

Sceptical or optimistic about qualified doctors being #wellness influencers?

Great piece here showing how doctors promoting wellness are largely indistinguishable from non-doctor wellness-sellers.

I have always hated the way smart speakers and chatbots mimic amicability and draw people in to talking to them as if there is a person there.

Great to read a scholarly exploration, using dear old Gigerenzer and Grice to set out the problem 🌟

Very satisfying! Beautifully done!

So well said. I can barely manage my own tenuous coping strategies. When everything caring, thoughtful, humble or nuanced seems made a mockery of, educating feels like a fool's errand.

But you are a wonderful political thinker, you can do it. All we can do is keep going? Imperfectly.
floracornish.bsky.social
May we be the kind of academic we admired in him! Such a huge huge loss 💔💔
floracornish.bsky.social
Lolsob, this is so stupid for so many reasons

Reason #3581: every academic I know who wins research funding ALWAYS spends unfunded time writing up and developing impact. The funding is never ever enough to complete the project. 😭

This is so clear on why "debate" is not a productive democratic format 🙏🙏🙏
olufemiotaiwo.bsky.social
people pretend that debate signals and defends a commitment to high minded politics. what it elevates instead is performative dishonesty as a basic mode of politics

The relentless contempt, disgust, even hate that successive UK governments exhibit for the country's (hitherto) wildly successful HE sector remains one of the most baffling sub-plots of a generally insane age.
