Never before in American history has one state's military force been deployed in another state over its objection.

I say never because the Civil War involved states whose governments legally ceased to exist, their offices vacated by constructive resignation, with no legitimate governors to object.

I want more commentators to acknowledge that the SCOTUS majority abetted an insurrection attempt and cannot constitutionally hold office. Their authority is as bogus as their “rulings”

It's not just that they're going to strike down a law against conversion therapy, it's that they're going to do it on behalf of made-up claims from a straw plaintiff who can't honestly show the law affected her at all

Aside from shattering core state sovereignty, it's saying one state's Guard (TX) is somehow more loyal to the national authority than another's (IL). It's treating the latter as something bordering on hostile, or at least alien. One part of the country and its soldiers are more America than another.

Presidents have federalized a state's own Guard to use over its objection, most famously desegregation. And sometimes regular military has been used. But taking one state's soldiers and putting them in another state? This is a completely unprecedented breakdown of what the Union fundamentally is.

I know invoking Latin terms can be a bit esoteric, and "dementia" is fine and accurate, but I think there's real merit in zeroing in on the relevant legal concept: he is non compos mentis. Not just that he's a batty old man, he is debilitated in a concrete legal sense, fit for conservatorship.

It is, but it's kind of the only viable response right now. At this point we have to count it as part of the wave of insane capitulation that so many people are treating "turn 25 GOP officials against the tyrant who tried to get them killed" as a total impossibility

The takeaway here is that we need to go all in on impeachment. We can't rely on voting alone - fascists won't honor the results - or wait on some vaporware Revolution. We have to demand that Congress oust the dictator and put all our boycott and protest momentum behind that push.

Only 80 congressional Dems have backed impeachment. Indivisible won't touch it, for all their No Kings talk. Ditto 50501 (at the national level—chapters have backed it!). Most pundits with large platforms are still aping corrupt Dems and taking the "realist" (gradualist) line. It's got to change.

There are incredibly brave people standing up in communities, on the ground. But they can't prevent regime consolidation by themselves. What will actually prevent regime consolidation is a robust counter-movement to END the regime, and the people trying to create that are still getting drowned out.

Appeals to “the odds” are a misdirection here. For all practical purposes, calling for impeachment is HOW YOU FORMALIZE THE STANCE THAT TRUMP MUST GO. Politicians who won‘t take that stance are not making a rational calculation of “the odds”: they are chickenshit and complicit.
