three comments on instagram. Mine says "what the look?" the first replay says "special interest." The next one says "unkempt, unhygienic. Think discord moderator or the stereotypical nerd who's not all too well dressed or put together with greasy hair. It's a common misconception because some people do struggle with hygiene that autistic people are musty and dress poorly or childish. Obviously, that's not true. That, paired with the "blank eyes" a lot of us have. We both know there is no "autistic look", just stereotypes, but unfortunately a LOT of people expect us to look like that so when we're... Not that, and pass as NT as well (GOD FORBID you're naturally very pretty, btw- there's this weird fucking idea that autism is supposed to make you ugly even though it has nothing to do with physical traits), people don't tend to take the diagnosis seriously." two more comments. The first says "no it’s that people think we can’t possibly have autism because we like fashion, dress up, and look good" the next one says "few specific things. 1. the stereotype that autism has a "look". many people (and just ableism) over time have made autism out to make people look as if they're uncared for and unhygienic. being conventionally attractive and autistic / neurodivergent these days makes people believe you're not and just "normal but quirky". 2. the autistic trait of special interests can commonly be fashion and beauty related, especially in autistic women who are already expected to enjoy this. neurotypical people don't tend to think about this as "autism" but rather a girl being a girl, as once again ableist stereotypes, especially those seeing autism as masculine, limit autism to way less than what it is." another comment says "and with the facial features part, they tend to expect a more asymmetrical face with broader upper face, larger mouth, wider set eyes, an ectomorphic body type (very very skinny naturally) etc. many studies falsely suggest that this is simply the look of autism when there's many developmental or genetic disorders that also commonly occur with autism that cause this usually. someone who doesn't fit into that being autistic makes many people confused since it's been so normalized to "look autistic" until recent years where autism care has been much more available and socially acceptable ." I have replied "ah, so am I perpetuating harmful stereotypes because I am autistic and ugly?"
