Really grateful for Mwenza from @foodandsolidarity.bsky.social repping the north-east and speaking out so clearly about the grim picture of #ukpoverty2026 as a continued political choice, and highlighting the urgent need for collective care and action on issues such as rent control.

There’s a romantic idea that if every neighbourhood grew food, our cities could feed themselves. Why does this idea runs up against land ownership, supermarket power and the way markets are organised, and why small farms alone can’t and won't meet urban need under those conditions?

After @nclgreenparty.bsky.social met with @foodandsolidarity.bsky.social to draft a motion opposing the cruel two-child benefit cap and NRPF*, I proposed it to Full Council today, seconded by Indy Cllr Tracey Mitchell.

It passed. Unamended.

A cross-party stand against the government on poverty.

🚨 EVICTION UPDATE: Dennis is STILL fighting eviction, but we’re fighting back.

After months in hotels, Dennis was given a flat, only to face another eviction? This is how the system fails people.

✅ Our strategy is working: The Chronicle covered his story

Man who spent months living in hotels fears he is about to be made homeless

❗️NO MORE GROWING UP POOR!❗️We fight for our kids and our communities. We won't be silent while Keir Starmer lies and our Labour MPs hide. Do they think it's right that 1 in 5 kids in the North East live in poverty? That 1 in 5 kids don't get the food they need?

🔥 LABOUR, LISTEN UP: NO MORE GROWING UP POOR.🔥
Chi Onwurah @chionwurah.bsky.social! You’d better tell your friends @lizkendallmp.bsky.social & Rachel Reeves that we are *not* falling for your minor climbdowns. We’re battle-hardened. We’re too smart for that.

📢 What changed, Chi? 50% of kids in Newcastle live in poverty! In 2023, @chionwurah.bsky.social asked why the government was making life so hard for kids. But in 2025, with a new government in power, the policies keeping children in poverty are still in place!

🚨 Tired of being told “Ah well, there’s nothing you can do”? There’s plenty you can do—but only if you’re organised.

Bosses and landlords count on people feeling isolated. That’s why they get away with crap wages, unsafe conditions, and homes falling apart.

Black mould is a silent killer in our homes—causing serious health risks and endangering lives. Landlords often don't act.
