Day 7: Poster

It was my face alright. Same curly hair, same gap in the two front teeth, same jawline.

I studied the piece of paper, committing the details to memory. I’d found it on a telephone pole. Someone had paid extra at the copy shop because the picture was in color, and the all-caps “MISSING” at the top of the page was rendered in a stark red.

I considered calling the listed number, but what would I say? What could I say?

I crumpled the poster and threw it on the pile. They won’t find him. Not if I can help it.

Day 6: Whirl

My stomach twisted, but James was screaming with delight, so I tried not to let it show on my face. I could never get the hang of carnival rides. I’m much more of a solid ground girlie, but I don’t want to be a wet blanket.

The tilt-a-whirl rose and fell as it spun us round and round, and as I watched the lights of the other rides smear through my vision, I heard a noise hiding behind my boyfriend’s delight.

“Something’s wrong!” I yelled.

James grabbed my hand, but didn’t hear me. The metal was twisting. Bolts came loose.

Day 5: Jar

Evan ran into the room where his family sat reading and held up the jar. “Look how many I got!” he yelled, his missing teeth giving him a smile like a jack-o-lantern and his eyes beaming.

“Oh God.” His mother jumped to her feet and threw her hands over her mouth. “How did he bypass the door security?”

“Evan,” his father said, slowly inching away from his son, “did you go outside?”

Evan thrust the jar forward causing his parents to flinch. “Aren’t they pretty mommy?”

As he unscrewed the lid, the security system detected the breach far too late.

Day 4: Toenails

The doctor called it a fungus. He said it was nothing to be ashamed of, but I’ve never let that stop me before. I did my best to hide my face as I picked up my cream from the pharmacy and smuggled the bag out the door without making eye contact.

When I took my shoes off at home, my socks were soaked in a rust colored liquid. It wasn’t quite blood and smelled reminiscent of mildew.

My toenails came off with my socks, and tiny eyes stared up from my nailbeds.

Now my fingernails are starting to look discolored…

Day 3: Obsidian

Obsidian is sharp. The volcanic stone can form an edge that can only be seen through an electron microscope.

I needed my blade to be even sharper than that.

Months of experimentation had finally yielded what I required: a blade that could bisect atoms; separating proton and neutron. Releasing all the energy that atoms contain with a simple flick of the wrist.

I knew when I sank it into the neck of my daughter’s killer, it wouldn’t just be him that died, but every variation across the multiverse. One stab, a trillion deaths. In every other world, she’d be safe.
