#31DaysOfGraves day 8 - glass. Arguably the most famous tomb despite its current state, the "Red Lady" (officially the Robertson mortuary chapel) was erected in 1865 for Mary Ann Robertson (1826–1858). The original red glass roof allowed red coloured daylight to flicker on the stone figure inside.

#31DaysOfGraves day 8: glass. I had problems finding a suitable image for this one. I know I have a photo of some stained glass in a mausoleum somewhere on my hard disk, but where? Oh well, this one of Lucy Gallop in West Norwood cemetery, London, shows her photograph behind glass.
A monochrome photograph of a woman in a circular frame. The glass protecting the photo is held in place by a copper alloy ring. The photo is surrounded by a wreath carved in grey stone which is also within an omega shaped piece of carved stone with a key-pattern in gold around the edge, The bottom of the photo shows the plinth of the monument also with a carved decoration.

On Saturday 20th September about 250 descendants of the Chiot & Phanariot diaspora commemorated their origins at the Hellenic Enclosure, West Norwood Cemetery in London. This diaspora was provoked by the Massacres of Chios in 1822. Read more about this at: www.christopherlong.co.uk/WhoAreYourPe...

A bit more detail in his journal and Gideon Mantell could have been the Samuel Pepys of paleontology. 6 March 1842: 'Attended a lecture by Prof. Ansted on the Megatherium, at the London Institution—very poor'. Need more dirt about the rubbish ground sloth lecture.
Stipple engraving of Gideon Mantell, standing before fossil bones. Painted by J. J. Masquerier and engraved by Samuel Stepney.

The heraldic Iguanodon on Maidstone's coat of arms seems to be drawn a bit differently each time. The designer of this version went to quite a lot of effort to make the dinosaur look as early modern as possible, including giving it mammalian ears. Image source: www.flickr.com/photos/kapta....

After the Napoleonic wars, the church commissioners decided to build four very similar churches in what's now South London: a St Matthew's (Brixton); St Mark's (Kennington); St Luke's (West Norwood) and St John's (Waterloo).

#TheVictorianBookoftheDead 'Mother always had an idea that some day she would go into a trance and be buried alive,’ said the young lady, ‘so be very careful, and see for a certainty that she is dead.’ An undertaker's dilemma: bury or watch?
