Today I spent a lovely hour with this fragment, which contains part of the genealogy of Christ from the Gospel of Matthew. The square notation suggests that it might be a Danish manuscript, possibly early thirteenth century.

Incidentally, I am still looking for this MS!
I reached out to the Kristeller archives @columbiauniversity.bsky.social some time ago, but still waiting for the reply. I guess their staff are having a rough time!

Kristeller (Iter Italicum V, 460b) gives a description of this unlocated MS of the Latin translation of Simplicius' commentary on Aristotle's De caelo. Anyone knows where it is now?
If you are a postdoc who wants to help with the critical edition, follow this account for a job opening, soon!

Unnoticed fragment from a medieval martyrology in German! One full MS is preserved in Jena (hence Jenaer Martyrologium), two other fragments are known. This one has many variants in the German dialect. Specialists' comments welcome!

A puzzle for the weekend: Who wrote this salacious little ditty? Retrieved from the ashes of the fire that destroyed the North transept of the Crystal Palace, it's an autograph composition and libretto, 'Un po di bastone' (a little stick). Who then is the composer? eaho.substack.com/p/a-mystery-...
The mystery musical manuscript, charred by the Crystal Palace fire of 1866
Eliza's husband David Ogilvy was a director of the Crystal Palace. After a fire destroyed the north transept he chose to salvage the charred remains of a composition and libretto in Italian. Why?

Coming up for auction: four leaves from a MS of the Modi significandi by Boethius of Dacia, one of the emblematic philosophers of the 13th c. No specific textual or aesthetic value, but the auctioneer rates them highly (est. 2000-3000 €)!

I've updated the record. The fun is that now the text under the paper pastedown becomes legible (the left column is the continuation of the Daniel passage with the column break op en|de). Also, those stubs are formed by folding the leaf over itself and glueing it, since r/v are the same columns.
Middelnederlands lectionarium (Fragment), Antwerpen, Erfgoedbibliotheek Hendrik Conscience, C 41193. A paper pastedown on the back of a book. Some classmarks and ownership marks have been written on there, and the cover has been folded over the pastedown. Underneath the pastedown can be seen the thin outline of a manuscript leaf used as a hooked endleaf guard. A ruler is at the bottom of the picture.

It's an excellent illustration of first and second intentions. The person sees an extramental object, which is the immediate foundation for first intentions ("Sortes", "Plato", "cat"); the manicule points to the act of observation, and that's the second intention ("individual", "species").

Very cool! Will you be putting your notes into a description? we'll change the metadata accordingly.
That might even be enough to calculate the dimensions of the written area/lines per page.

I solved a nice puzzle this morning: unidentified Middle Dutch religious text on @fragmentarium.bsky.social (Antwerp, EHC, cf. @svanimpe.bsky.social ) turns out to be a lectionarium, comparable to the 1348 Lectionarium Amstelodamense (but with interesting variants). fragmentarium.ms/overview/F-8...

Is there an uncanny valley for fragments? Something that seems to be full of detail but isn't, in the same way that some things appear to be human but are not? This fragment points to yes.

There are several fragments that seem almost taunting in the way their information is barely attainable, where the wear & tear of ink & parchment seem to promise possibilities of deciphering that they are not going to provide in the end. This one is among them.

[Sveriges Riksarkiv Fr 25641]
Page from a medieval calendar, containing the feasts for March. The fragment is so badly worn that the few surviving entries are barely legible. The most legible text is the added entry of March 28, featuring a feast of Saint Ambrose of Milan.

As I'm preparing for an upcoming talk, I have been reminded of my brief & unsuccessful attempt to identify the feasts indicated in this calendar fragment. It can be done, but it would require a lot of time & grey hairs.

[Sveriges Riksarkiv Fr 5739]
Fragment of a late medieval calendar - possibly fifteenth century - showing the feasts of the month of March. Because the calendar has been cut into a strip, only the ranks of the feasts can be identified, but not the feasts themselves.
