Trip to the Giant’s Causeway - checking out successive lava flows of the British and Irish Paleogene Province- with bonus Laterites!

Geologising with fellow enthusiastic geologists 🌋

Day 08 of #septempera - a frog going though some stuff.

Wanted to do something moodier and misty but the cooler tones got away from me and the painting got a bit too dark so I added some pastels.

Seeing an outcrop IN PERSON after reading about it/ seeing photos is pretty awesome 🙌🏼

I’ve been focussed on this area as a case study for mixing and mingling textures since the start of my PhD …
SE Iceland 🇮🇸 🌋 is spectacular!

#LASI7 #IAVCEI
Frankie smiling in front of an outcrop in SE Iceland. She is wearing a green hat and bright red rain jacket. The rocks behind her show mixed and mingled textures, Dolerite in granophyre. Frankie standing in front of the outcrop wearing red jacket black trousers and balancing with her crutches.

In some cases, the core may be unique and irreplaceable, especially where land has since been developed or reclassified. Maintaining a reference library of boreholes enables future research to take place using new techniques, saving time, reducing costs and limiting the environmental impact.
An illustration titled 'What can geological core tell us?' BGS © UKRI. Based on Rushton (1979). The labels on the core include: boreholes samples collection, thin section, Calcareous micropalaeontology, continuous core scanning, Palynology, sub-cylinder sampling, observational data, physical and geological characterisation (porosity, permeability, age), type and stratigraphical collection

1 of #365Minerals 🧪⚒️

Quetzalcoatlite:
- Named after Quetzalcoatl, an Aztec and Toltec god of the sea, due to its sea-blue colour
- Forms in the oxidised zone of tellurium-bearing hydrothermal deposits #minerals
- This below is a co-type specimen (one of the specimens used to define the species)
Tiny blue-green crystals (there's a green coloured arrow stuck on the specimen to point these out) with some leaf-green illite and blue azurite on a matrix. From Bambollita Mine, Moctezuma, Sonora, Mexico.

Specimen from the Natural History Museum, London's collections.

More weird geology and cool clouds from a day out in the Highlands of #Iceland in July 2023.

#AwesomeFoursome
B&W photo of some strange old lava formations - one of which has a hole like an eye at the top, facing upwards. In the foreground is a rock with some thrift flowers sticking out of it; above are ominous dark clouds. More strange lava formations - a couple of pieces dominate the photo and have holes in the middle. Above are dark grey possibly mammatus clouds. Dark mammatus clouds above old grey lava with an orange crater rim in the distance. Folds of old grey lava - look like some animals of faces (if you suffer from pareidolia!). No sky.

So after a little extra research I’ve found that sliabh liag on many tourist leaflets is referred to as the highest sea cliff in Ireland … however

Croaghaun Cliffs on Achill Island, Co. Mayo, 688 meters (2,257 feet).

Sliabh Liag, Co. Donegal is 601 meters (1,972 feet)

Sliabh Liag is no2!
frankiebutler.bsky.social
Oh you’re so right! Sliabh liag is second highest. My source was a guide book from the visitor centre. But I’ve just double checked on Google Earth and you’re right ! Thanks for pointing that out 🙌🏼

The geology of the Sliabh Liag peninsula is spectacular.

Irelands highest sea cliffs!

Metamorphosed dalradian metasediments with extreme recumbent folding, vertical strata and some impressive metamorphic textures (syntectonic).

Common seals basking on a Palaeogene dyke at Kildonan. Three Highland cows (two adults and one baby) in Glen Rosa. It is a cloudy day but the sun is shining over the scene. There are mountains in the background. Pladda island from Kildonan at the south of the island. You can see a small amount of mist across the sand at the forefront of the image, and some large rocks are dotted around. It is a sunny day, with some small clouds off to the left. Cir Mhor mountain at sunrise. It is glowing a deep copper colour.
