The reason the Right are so invested in the myth that the arts have no value isn’t because the arts don’t generate wealth (they do); it’s that studying the arts teaches people to imagine better ways of judging the value of an idea than by counting how much money it makes…

Today is a day when arts degrees are worthless, but the product of those degrees is so valuable it would kill an entire industry if they were made to pay for it.

Hey kids!

Remember when the pandemic struck and eventually the (Tory) government told everyone to stay at home, and the arts and entertainment industries were one of the few things keeping everyone from pulling our own eyes out of our skulls from abject fear and boredom?

Remember that?

How is this repeatedly made into a policy issue - by *all* parties - when the blunt fact of the matter is that grown adults who are obliged to pay for their own education, and relentlessly pursued to repay their loans, should be able to study whatever the fuck they want.

Just managed to sneak this in before Eldest took it back to the library - what an absolute stonker of a graphic novel. The music references are *gold* as are the feelings of being a teenage outcast. 100/10, no notes.
The front cover of 'Everything Amplified' by Sarah Lippett and Ziggy Hanaor. It shows a large guitar amp with with two young people sat on top.

While I'm sure this is true, I'm also sure that the world we live in has a lot to do with it.

I'm about a third of the way through Green Laughing and am absolutely loving it so far. It's really unexpected, and the flashbacks are integrated into the prose in such a fluid way 😍

The Darkest Tide is up next and I'm super excited about that too!

We do have a couple of revjew copies going spare if you're interested. One epic fantasy and one sort of character driven, cosy-scifi 👀

Right. Enough time online now. I have too many books to read and more inbound (I didn't buy them, I swear! It's just library books!)

Enjoy your evening, friends. 🥰

I encourage you to read banned books and read them with your kids. (Age appropriate ones--yes they have even banned picture books.) Talk about book banning with your kids. Ask them what they think about someone else's parents telling their teachers what your kids are mature enough to read.

That is always super disappointing. Though also probably for the best, because according to other people, I already have too many trebuchets.🙄

Pro tip: NEVER use a joke character name.
I used Phil McCrackin "temporarily" & it stuck, so I had the other characters make jokes about it etc.
Now I'm writing a synopsis & I don't have enough words for "yes this is intentional, no it's not a comedy book, yes, I do intend to keep it as it is." 😐🫠

Sometimes, you find something you once wrote and you REALLY like it.
A screenshot from a text document which says:

Like the strange central building had become the False Library, our end destination in the night had earned the moniker Eli’s Necropolis. On those evenings, around the table, I liked to imagine – as Pet did – that we were the explorers of old. I liked to imagine that if we could somehow prove that it was possible to live on Hel, those who came after us would cite our badly drawn charts and speak our makeshift etymologies.

Bought this on a whim in the @northodoxpress.bsky.social sale & absolutely loved it. The depiction of grief & two slightly broken people coming together was amazing.
Not my usual genre - so glad I picked it up. Reminded me of Lost For Words by Stephanie Butland.

These look great, but are definitely something I wouldn't have considered before reading 'Pride and Prejudices: Queer Lives and the Law' by Keio Yoshida.

If you've not read it yet, definitely give it (and these books!!) a go!

For you queer law nerds, I highly recommend this duo of gems (edited by @claerwen.bsky.social and @pagingdrpaige.bsky.social). These books explore how “queer” transforms arenas of international law alongside how international law recognises and/or rejects disruptive lives, bodies, and intimacies. 🌈🎓
Two colourful books on a brown table. The books are:

Queer Encounters with International Law

Queer Engagements with International Law

(I'm using 'Anglo-English' to describe the whole of the UK mainland, which isn't really correct - I speak Scots Standard English, for example, but I also know the word. I chose 'Anglo-English' because pretty much all UK English speakers understand that version and I'm limited on characters.)
