We are encouraged by today’s #CrimeAndPolicingBill. The new offence of child criminal exploitation is a critical step forward; however, it's important to have a clear definition of child criminal exploitation alongside the offence to properly safeguard child victims 👇
"The creation of standalone offence for child criminal exploitation (CCE) is a long awaited and critical step forward finally holding perpetrators, not victims, to account. Efforts to combat shoplifting, phone theft and knife crime are also positive – but many of these offences are known to be committed by children coerced by exploiters. Therefore, it is important to have a clear definition of CCE alongside the offence. It would end the postcode lottery in victim support, and prioritise safeguarding, when backed with clear guidance alongside comprehensive training for police and professionals. There is a fear without having a clear definition, child victims risk being punished twice; first by criminals, then by the state. These children need to be protected, and their exploiters need to be punished. It is only then that we can start breaking the cycle of abuse and give children a fair chance to rebuild their lives." - Mark Russell, Chief Executive of The Children’s Society
