Every person who agreed and everyone who went along with the lie that "something had to be done" but that "something" was not "housing" is responsible in their part, however small. "Being lied to" is not an excuse for "believing lies." You cannot, famously, cheat an honest man.

Trump repeatedly cited homelessness as an excuse for flooding DC with cops and troops, conflating being unhoused with being a criminal. He's building on a bipartisan policy consensus that's surged across blue and red states and cities. New from me @newrepublic.com newrepublic.com/article/1991...
The Bipartisan Roots of Trump’s Cruel Crackdown on the Homeless
The White House is ordering brutal clearings and displacement of the most economically vulnerable Americans. Democrats and Republicans have jointly helped pave the way for this.

An image of Julie Andrews in The Sound of Music, twirling on an alpine meadow in a long Austrian skirt, next to an image of Christopher Plummer as Georg Von Trapp in the same movie, tearing a Nazi flag in half.

I don't think the American theological crisis will ever "come to a head" because American "theology" consists of "believe whatever you want and hang out with people who agree with you." It's structurally immune to crisis because it never asks anyone to do anything uncomfortable

The American theological crisis will come to a head when the Pope and the Archbishop of Canterbury will be on the same side against the Catholic convert VP and the nondenominational (Southern Baptist) mega church pastors who back the admin.

Funny thread but this is obviously the correct response, you can't have a passenger aviation industry if people refuse to follow the crew's instructions (in an exit row no less!)
kashhill.bsky.social
Now we’re stuck in Denver to refuel. Flight attendant tells me they can’t charge dude’s credit card a premium seat fee while we’re in the air and it becomes a safety issue when a person in exit row won’t comply.

If he had gone to biz class seat instead, they could have dealt with it after flight.

"It was taken as gospel that abortion rights were safe/that gender was biological/that trade is a free lunch," well, it wasn't taken as gospel by the people who disagreed!
freequentflyer.bsky.social
I think this is a symptom of a disease I call "you know there are classes after 101, right?" An incredible amount of people's incorrect beliefs derive from liking your high school biology teacher/introductory economics profesor/1L con law professor and repeating their false beliefs verbatim.

You can argue the opposition was feckless, or economically illiterate, or driven by nostalgia, but it's preposterous to deny it was there or be surprised that having been repressed in one form it has reemerged in another
freequentflyer.bsky.social
"It was taken as gospel" is a very funny thing to say about a movement that was fought tooth and nail every step of the way, from Perot's "giant sucking sound" to the Battle of Seattle. It's true that it won but it won over constant, vigorous opposition!
chrislhayes.bsky.social
Basically this was the entire logic fo neoliberalism and globalization - yes lots of job destruction, but prices falling on all kinds of goods and new jobs in new areas. It was taken as gospel that all of it was a net benefit, but that's a bit harder argument to make these days.

Those influencing Trump education policy aren't shy about wanting to eradicate public schools.

Asked what % of kids she imagines should be in public schools, Tiffany Justice -- Moms for Liberty cofounder, now with Heritage Foundation -- told @propublica.org

“I hope zero. I hope to get to zero.”
These Activists Want to Dismantle Public Schools. Now They Run the Education Department.
Under Trump, the Department of Education has been bringing in activists hostile to public schools. It could mean a new era of private and religious schools boosted by tax dollars — and the end of publ...

A remarkable thing about American cultural hegemony is that you sometimes hear people elsewhere in the Anglosphere say "it's a free country" about countries that are absolutely not free. I once heard a Brit complaining his First Amendment rights were being violated!

Yeh, you can't even disagree with the action of declaring Palestine Action a terrorist group. Pretty sure they will just try to arrest anyone with the words Action & Palestine in what they deem to be the wrong order at this point. Some politicians are really in need of swift replacement.

You've reminded me of a joke my now-wealthy friend told about a sensitive procedure. "You're in luck! The best surgeon in the country is in-network!" To which he replied, "I think I'd be willing to pay out-of-pocket to have it done right."

That's the issue the GOP doesn't want, the common pool. A Kaiser Permanente for all would mean interminable waits for mental health care and mandatory step therapy to find the most cost-effective way to treat a condition, rather than just jumping to the highest step and making insurance pay.
sharonk.bsky.social
part of the problem is that the GOP basically doesn't want to touch employer-based healthcare despite the fact that getting everyone into a common pool and providing universal basic care is probably more affordable
sharonk.bsky.social
there's probably a world where the GOP decides to have a basic voucher system that would cover the basic benefits but that would require the GOP to actually be capable of making legislation that touches third rails of American politics:

What makes you conclude a conspiracy needs to involve secrecy? Why would the motives or bidding need to be secret? Lots of conspiracies are public; there are photographs of the Yalta conference!
