Good luck Malawi, as the country goes to the polls in elections that may well deliver another transfer of power.

As many of you know, Malawi is very close to my heart.

Great primer on the elections by Richard Kweitsu here:

As someone who co-wrote "How to Rig an Election" with @fromagehomme.bsky.social, let me just say how insane it is that the US president is peddling talking points on "honest elections" from a dictator who routinely rigs votes, sometimes by hunting down and murdering his political opponents.

Trump: "Vladimir Putin said something- one of the most interesting things. He said 'your election was rigged because you have mail in voting. It's impossible to have mail in voting & have honest elections.' He said that to me because we talked about 2020. He said, 'you won that election by so much'"

"Zambia needs a new constitution, but it deserves one that is rooted in evidence, consultation and democratic principles. Anything less threatens to undermine the country’s hard-won democratic gains and Hichilema’s own legacy."
fromagehomme.bsky.social
"Like many Zambians and international observers, I was hopeful for the new administration. Yet, while the government has kept some campaign promises and negotiated a difficult deal on the country’s debt burden, efforts to restore democracy are now going backwards ..."

"I take no pleasure in saying this. The last time I wrote such an article about Zambia, it was to condemn the persecution of Hichilema after he was arrested in 2017 on trumped up treason charges. I was honoured to receive a letter of thanks upon his release."

Four filmmakers – Nicholas Gichuki, Brian Adagala, Mark Karubiu, & Chris Wamae – were arrested in Kenya on 2 May & charged for providing footage to a BBC documentary investigating Kenyan police violence during June 2024 protests. The chilling effect of the case was immediate.

Why is the Kenyan government at war with the country's youth activists?

"As I write, a clip that captures the police shooting – in the head, at close range – a street vendor named Boniface Kariuki is going viral ... "

Always an honour to be published in the Journal of Democracy.

"We must face an uncomfortable truth: Democracies often fail to reverse the damage after an authoritarian lapse. If we are to make our political systems more resilient, we must strengthen democracy before it is too late."

As well as terrorising the country’s civil society leaders, this has further undermined the national and international legitimacy of President Ruto’s regime.

The question this leave us with is therefore: how far will Kenya’s war on youth activism go?

If you would like to do a media about the findings of the GYPI, just let me know!
fromagehomme.bsky.social
The GYPI is managed by the European Partnership for Democracy, funded by the European Union, and the research was led through the Centre for Elections, Democracy, Accountability and Representation (CEDAR) of the University of Birmingham

Whether you're a policymaker, researcher, or advocate, the GYPI offers a strong, evidence-based resource to:

- Benchmark youth participation globally and regionally
- Identify gaps and push for policy change
- Support program design with meaningful data
- Amplify youth demands
