Going to also jump in to say something I've been mulling on all morning: it's so tempting and easy to look at "engineering brain" as the main cause of all this. But that's not where the problem lies: I've talked with non-engineers starting projects and, believe me, they're not immune to it at all.

I don't know how we break this cycle, but we need this cycle to break or the spiral will just keep going.

I'm going to push back against the "privileged techie" framing. Various folks at Bluesky are not privileged techies, and not being a privileged techie is, having seen it happen to any kind of team, not going to be enough to save you. In a way, it will make it worse: people WILL use it against you.

Folks, I should really publish this in tech talk on my blog in text form, and part of what's stopping me is I need ALT text for the slides and my usual volunteers are all currently helping with other stuff. If anyone has space for it, it'd speed this up a lot 🙏

I can confirm that if you have the intense raw processing power of "web browser" and "notepad" you too can contribute (and we would very seriously appreciate the help)

for fuck's sake, no, bsky is not selectively moderating against trans people, if anything, some people have done a lot of behaviour that according to the letter of the rules would result in permabans, and yet they're getting 24h strikes and being let back on because of community pressure.
