👋 Hey I'm Aimee, a Rose postdoc at the #CornellLab!

Recently finished my PhD at Utah State University studying American white pelican demography+movement and am now building gnarly integrated population models with avian data.

Love nerdy tech stuff and obsessed with making weird kinds of bread 🍞

"Right now, if one of my students came to me and said, 'Hey, as part of my Ph.D. I want to enter the world's birds into a dataset,' I'm like, 'No, you're not doing that. You'll never finish your Ph.D.' "

Too true omg 😂

Anyway, this is a very exciting dataset!

Did you know your MacBook has a sensor that knows the exact angle of the screen hinge?

It’s not exposed as a public API, but I figured out a way to read it and make it sound like an old wooden door.

My feed is full of depressing and serious things, but there IS still beauty and fun in the world, so here’s a pelican in St James’s Park gently trying to filch @davidho.bsky.social ‘s shoe. It decided it wasn’t worth it and solemnly set about collecting leaves in its beak to make a nest on a bench.

Analytical AI is doing amazing things in science and medicine. Generative LLMs are theft. Do not conflate the two.
aliettedebodard.com
This is a prime example of:
-misleading headline
-missing context (gives rate of false negatives but tools with high false negatives are used in medicine all the time, so that rate might not be significant)
-use of "AI": conflating generative AI with the analytical AI that's widely used in medicine

Rest in peace and power to elder and actor Graham Greene who belonged to Oneida of the Six Nations, People of the Standing Stone, and who hailed from Ohswekan which I visited in 2018 to interview an Indigenous Seedkeeper. Condolences, solace to his family and community. Huge loss and far too young.

✨ New preprint! "Too few, too many, or just right?" 🌍🌎🌏 We explore how to evaluate study design in animal tracking studies by assessing sampling duration, interval, and, now, the number of individuals needed for reliable population-level estimates. #movementecology www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...
Graphical abstract for a manuscript titled "Too few, too many, or just right? Optimizing sample sizes for population-level inferences in animal tracking projects". The workflow presented in this manuscript evaluates sampling design by assessing sampling duration, sampling interval, and the number of sampled individuals needed to obtain reliable population-level estimates.
