An excellent, clear-eyed FT weekend essay by @stephenkb.bsky.social setting out the choices confronting governments on immigration: on.ft.com/3IxIcvo
The truth about immigration
Ageing societies seeking to preserve living standards will continue to rely on new arrivals — but governments can be clearer about the trade-offs

Don’t touch any more people
Spent this morning on the Q train with Andrew Cuomo, who took personal responsibility for his lackluster mayoral primary bid. He vows a very different general election run, saying he'll focus on "reaching out to more young people and touching more people." www.nydailynews.com/2025/07/16/a...

We didn't make a lot of predictions in The AI Con, but @emilymbender.bsky.social reminded me that we did call this one:

"Someday soon, there may be a point where you’ll not only be encouraged to use ChatGPT, but you will be required to use it."

Of course he said that. Why am I not surprised?

Dumb AND gross. Nice combo.

Stop humanizing the digital regurgitation device. It is not talking to you. It is not thinking. You are a fucking dunce if you think it is.

It’s 2030, and you’ve been arrested because of a positive breath print match.

“researchers report that your patterns of breathing through your nose are so distinctive that it may be possible to identify you by breath alone, suggesting we have “breath prints.”
Researchers have "developed a wearable sensor that fit on volunteers’ upper backs, with tubes running around to capture the airflow out of each nostril."

Why? Surveillance, of course: to "identify individuals from recordings of their breathing patterns."
