The death toll at Srebrenica was about 8,400. At Katyn, about 22,000. At Babi Yar, about 34,000.

Add those together and you've just barely cracked the low-end estimate of the death toll at El Fasher.
So, El Fasher looks like one of the worst single event atrocities to happen this century so far, but the evidence has come in such a trickle it seems to only now be getting verified
At least 60,000 murdered in Sudanese city, which resembles ‘a slaughterhouse’
Satellite evidence shows extent of paramilitary massacre in El Fasher

We’re getting an object lesson in this on the immigration front: “We ought to ensure that only legal immigrants reside here” sounds like common sense to Joe Barstool until it turns out that if you’re really serious about it, you need a brutal police state. “Who wills the end wills the means.”

Here's a draft I made! My 7 year old helped my with some suggestions of things she likes to do at the library. And I made a custom one for myself of things I want to do next year at the library.

As an also-writer and editor, this is both deeply felt and gives continued confirmation to my “father of a daughter (is almost everyone)” theory. Flat out well said too.
🧵 I've been a writer for my entire life, and worked very hard to get where I got by 2022. I was making a 100k a year, though I live in an expensive city. Suddenly it was just gone. I had three careers, really, and they all vanished because of AI, and suddenly I was struggling each month to pay rent.
When the AI boom began, copywriters were singled out as one of the jobs most vulnerable to AI. Now, three years later, I wanted to hear from workers on the frontlines of the industry, to hear what had actually taken place on the ground.

For many, it was even worse than they'd feared.

Trumpers envisioned the torment of Abrego Garcia as a showcase for their lawlessness and assault on constitutional protections, and a demonstration that resistance was futile
But due to the efforts of advocates, legislators and lawyers -- and resolute adherence to the law by judges -- they've failed
Remarkable how brutal the ruling against Trump on Abrego Garcia truly is: It details flagrant and malicious abuses of power all throughout. Trump and Stephen Miller were testing their ability to spread lawless state terror. But the court held the line. 1/

Fiasco for Trump as Judge Issues Harsh Rebuke in Abrego Garcia Case
Judge Paula Xinis’s ruling temporarily freed Kilmar Abrego Garcia from custody. It also savagely indicted Trump’s lawless handling of this whole affair from start to finish.

Film fest premiere of P&P (‘05 don’t @ me) and we were a collective experiencing that hand clench and Collins Cringe and dawn emergence from the fog; everyone sat back and had a huge replete sigh basically the same moment as the end credits rolled.

(& any action/adv in NYC w a packed house lol)
Raising the always fun question: What are your most memorable theater-going experiences?

Mine also include The Matrix, Blair Witch, and being way too stoned in Belgium when Fellowship of the Ring was sold out so we sat in the back row for Mulholland Drive instead.
It was hands-down one of the most memorable theater-going experiences I can remember, a collective 30-minute butt-clench/armrest-grab for the final climb. And we knew he lived! Wild.

It's clear from the article that ICE is *miserable* here. They're freezing their asses off and being harassed everywhere they go. Property managers aren't allowing them access to rental properties and people know their rights and aren't letting them in.

KEEP IT UP.

Everything now becomes memetic.
there is a very good book about transatlantic exchange of fascist, eugenicist and racist ideas in the early 20th century and how those ideas shaped the nazi government in its early years. this has been transformed in popular understanding to "the nazis copied jim crow"
If you’ve heard the “the Nazis got their ideas from the US segregationists” I beg you to please stop. This is both false and it minimizes historical European antisemitism in a misguided attempt to emphasize the nature of US anti-Black racism.

It’s horrific without comparison to Nazism.

May I politely encourage you to reconsider this framing. It is inaccurately stated and suggests consistent and strong linkages that do not exist.

The Nazis did not “get their ideas” from confederate laws. Antisemitism and anti-Jewish laws existed in Europe long before the Confederacy…
