Our conversation about immigration is framed entirely on Nigel Farage’s terms.
Labour has completely capitulated the ground to the far right, the racism & the hate.

We no longer have a conversation AT ALL about how we need immigration & when we cut it, we pay the price. #r4today

On our most watched breakfast TV just now, ludicrous instance of what’s wrong with how Britain holds its politicians to account. Labour Chancellor being interviewed by a former Labour Shadow Chancellor and Labour Treasury Minister - whose wife happens to be the Labour Foreign Secretary. #GMB

As one of the people Rachel Reeves mentioned yesterday - council tax band D, Darlington - I’d still prefer keyworkers from London weren’t charged 4 grand a year just because they now live in a £2m house passed down to them. #budget

What's frustrating about #Budget2025 is the wasted year.

Labour could have scrapped the two-child limit, cut energy bills and done a freeze on rail fares in last year's Budget.

Instead they tried to target pensioners and disabled people, and were forced into embarassing u-turns and lost goodwill.

2 child benefit limit. Dunno why they’re cheering. Only took her 18 months. A Labour govt 18 months to do that in the 6th richest country on earth. Anything less than dealing with child poverty as the emergency it was in July 2024 was never gonna be sufficient. #budget

I got a mention in the budget - council tax Band D in Darlington. Yes, the banding done 34 years ago is ridiculous. #budget

Not allowing motability top-ups is just plain spiteful. Being nasty to “them” for the sake of it is straight out of the Trumpian playbook. Shamefully unbecoming of a Labour Govt. #budget

Add a surcharge on every purchase made by someone who walks up to a counter in a coffee shop and starts their order with the words ‘Can I get’.
Tax people who abbreviate university to uni.

Far too early days yet but Robins going up with Stoke and us is a bit of a story. I wouldn’t begrudge it him tbh obvs as long at it’s not at our expense. #pusb

What’s handy for Farage is that his own innate racism has been a timely distraction at a time when his parroting Putin’s propaganda is also high on the agenda.

Was trying to work out in which way Shabana Mahmood, an otherwise pretty unremarkable politician, could possibly be described as a "luminous golden star" who "dazzles like a blue-white supernova" and then I realised, its simply a willingness to be a bit more cruel to immigrants

If only Farage’s years and years of parroting Putin’s propaganda made the top of the news instead of what we already supposed about his racism. #GMB

Re fly tipping, Susannah giving us a run down of the funding choices LAs have to make and how difficult it is. No mention of successive Tory Govts making it their sole mission to tear up the very fabric of civil society for the best part of a decade. #GMB

No mate. Fly tipping on this scale isn’t because society’s changed so people don’t call it out when they see it. It’s because the Tories spent a decade skinning public services to the bone, at the same time further enriching a tiny minority of ridiculously rich people. #GMB

Idea of universalism in state welfare is dying out, with binning the ones we have left regularly discussed. Universal welfare the country could well afford when it was on the bones of its arse after WW2. That’s another win ticked off for the neoliberal project shafting the majority of us. #gmb

Another phone in going down the line of this country being unable to afford universal state welfare, regardless of means. Universal welfare is a great leveller and we seemed to be able to well afford it when the country was on the bones of its arse after world war 2. #LBC
