Anyhow, I try to find small, concrete things to do so I can avoid panicking, so right now, that small thing is buying cookies from transgender Girl Scouts. As a bonus, I will also have cookies.

I often see people try to push back against book bans by saying parents can decide what their own kid reads but no one else's. While I get the impulse, it's not doing what you think it is, as OP explains. It's still the same parents' rights dance, just to a different tune.
children are entirely politically powerless and wholly dependent upon and at the mercy of others. they are cannot assert their basic rights, & their voices do not factor into any notion of “public opinion.” so it comes as no surprise that the idea that kids *have* rights strikes people as odd.
