Lots of poor folks from Appalachia enlist. My dad and his four siblings each went into a different branch of the military to fund their college. And they're all fucked up in different ways because of it. Something something something Tarquin. I'll write more when I'm not rushing to work.

but Lucanis is richer than perhaps god and it just doesn't look the same on him. Different vibes even if the grooming base is somewhat similar. Anyway, Appalachian AU where Tarquin's family comes from a line of coal miners and the only way out of Black Lung Central is to enlist.

having a hard time finding non-jokey pics online because haha people love making fun of poor Appalachians. But my uncle has it, my cousin has it, most of my best friends in high school/college had it. It's very much a working class thing. And it's interesting because Lucanis has something similar.

I am from Virginia. Red state Virginia, not blue state Virginia. There are two Virginias. (This is not discourse about West Virginia, but Virginia Virginia.) And in Appalachian Virginia, there's a certain kind of facial hair pattern I see over and over among friends, family, and neighbors.

I worried about drawing Tarquin distinct enough from Lucanis as they have similar beards and their hair is long enough to be pulled back. But I realized... I've seen this facial hair before. I've grown up around this facial hair before.

Tarquin is Appalachian-coded. Let me explain.
