How do geminiviruses maximize their limited coding capacity? Our recent preprint uncovers splicing of viral transcripts as one more strategy used by this viral family. We show that RNA splicing is prevalent in the geminivirus TYLCV — and required for infectivity! www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...
Pervasive splicing in a plant DNA virus
Viruses maximize their limited coding space through strategies that increase transcript and protein diversity. In mammalian viruses, splicing is a well-established mechanism for proteome expansion, ye...

Cool new paper from the Doudna lab!

1. A Cas10 enzyme was found to constitutively synthesise cyclic nucleotides.
2. These stopped a toxic protein from dimerising and killing the cell.
3. Viruses which disrupt immunity also compromise the Cas10, triggering cell death!

Students are not a monolithic group

Those who apply themselves are rightfully appalled to receive slop-py AI feedback. Folks pay to be taught by teachers, and this is a fundamental betrayal of that

Those who just need a diploma wouldn't mind AI feedback. Theyd just feed it into ChatGPT and move on
gene-boy.bsky.social
Recently reviewed a preprint written with AI. Not inherently an issue, but the resulting text lacked ...excitement? Turns of phrase were banal, words like "comprehensive" overused and often inappropriately (never before read of a *comprehensive* gene panel). Finishing the review felt like a chore...

Hi Internet! I'm Drew and THIS IS MY FACE.

If this GIF has ever brought you joy in the past, I humbly ask you to consider making a donation to the National MS Society. It would mean a lot to me and to those I know affected by the disease!

Organic farming was the norm for millenia. The food was expensive, and the food supply was less certain.

Some in the EU (BG) still spend >20% of income on food, and the EU is promoting organic?? We can not afford it.

We want healthy, affordable, sustainably produced food. Focus on that.

Today's fish is definitely one of the more eye-catching ones. This is an intermediate-phase Leopard Wrasse (Macropharyngodon meleagris). Pic from Anilao

You are right! But not all labs are non-commercial, and even non-commercial labs have to reckon with the convoluted IP landscape if they try to bring their science out of the lab. It has been a major decelerator of progress in the GE field.
gene-boy.bsky.social
While it is nice that an AI has been created to help novices with things like guide RNA design, the article pushes the strange opinion that this somehow "democratizes" GE.

The real barriers to GE for many labs are things like Cas9 IP and tissue culture. This has, unfortunately, not changed.

Musk is STILL a member of @royalsociety.org … even after calling for violence.
Which scientists would like to be in the same society as this despicable person?
joerglau.bsky.social
Musk calls for regime change in UK, promotes violence at far-right rally.
Why is this allowed to continue? How can Europe (UK included) counter hybrid war by the world's richest man and owner of a "platform"?
This is a direct and imminent threat to democracy.

New preprint! 🐛 Root-knot nematodes hijack root cells, turning them into feeding sites and making plants very sick. Using a cross-species scRNA-seq approach we mapped this process and show how this knowledge can be used to engineer resistant crops.🌱 A summary🧵 :

Oh. My. Goodness. Look at this moth! LOOK AT THOSE WINGS!! Honestly didn't know that moth wings could be that frilly and lacy - like bird feathers - but apparently there is a whole family of "many plumed moths". This one is from the genus Alucita and found in China, and is just spectacular. (1/3)

Taking part in a #PreprintPizzaParty is always a pleasure!

It's an enjoyable and natural way to learn how to critically and constructively review science. It's also very valuable to see how others approach the same manuscript.

I hope to see more institutions adopting this format!

This is one of the coolest, most impactful things coming out of the #CRISPR world, but also one of the hardest to get anyone to pay attention to. Sure, we can repair genetic diseases, but have you heard about apomixis in crop plants? No really
